I'm new here, heres a pic of 1 of my chameleons

Hey everyone, I found this site via google while doing some research on breeding panther chameleons. Incase anyone asks, I am in the Durham Region in Canada, Ontario and I'm 25 so I am mature about this and ready to learn, I already have experience breeding bearded dragons and have had over 100 dragons hatch successfully (and live and end up in good homes) in 2011.

I have 2 panther chameleons

The male (pic attached) is I believe 8-11 months old, I can't remember as I have misplaced all the paperwork that I have on all of my reptiles when moving (I have no idea how I lost it, but I thought I safeguarded that stuff pretty closely :()

My female panther is about 4-5 months old (found a pic on my mac from when we got her in october last year at 2 months old, she would now be 5 months old (almost) and she sheds about once a week (starting to slow down a bit now)

(I also have and breed 2 bearded dragons and I have a 3rd bearded dragon which is a male leatherback and have been breeding them for about a year, with 90 eggs in the incubator right now, it has actually stopped holding its temp at 83F and is holding at 83F then will drop to 74F and won't correct until a few hours later, switch is on normal not mute and I'm pretty angry about this since it's only a year old, made by Exo-Terra

Anyways, here is the male (blue bar):

And here is the female about a week after we got her, I thought both of these pictures were my 2 best pics:

I would like to ask a few questions:

1) I need a new incubator, it can wait since I am thinking of getting rid of the bearded dragons, we have 5 reptiles in total, and breeding the beardies is costing us (my gf and I) a little too much, we are buying 1000 crickets every 2 weeks @ $34.99, however when we have 30-40 baby bearded dragons the cost instantly doubles from $80/month in food to about $150-$160 (btw, I feed my reptiles very very well :D)

Regardless, the question is what incubator is the best, I don't want to use a homemade one I prefer a professional level, max cost of $350.00

2) How old should my female be before I breed her with our male, obviously he will be old enough when she is.

3) What kind of lay box did you build and how did it work out for you, I've heard getting chameleons to lay eggs can be pretty challenging.

4) We breed and sell to local stores in our area.

We bought our male panther chameleon for $399.99+taxes

My work had a day where a company came and sold coupon booklets and my boss knowing that I am breeding reptiles and that I love the hobby bought me a booklet for a place called Reptilia (I've never been there until he gave me these) and while talking to one of the managers about breeding beardies and wanting to get into chameleons, I showed him the picture of our male and he said he had the perfect chameleon if I'm interested. Needless to say the chameleon (our female panther now) had a price tag of $450. After asking tons of questions and such I didn't even haggle because I told him I couldn't afford to just drop that kind of money right now, he gave the chameleon to me for $250.00 out the door and she's been awesome so far and is pretty used to me now.

BTW: I've heard its rare, but our chameleon is happy in his 175gallon flexarium. However, he loves coming out so much I can barely ever feed him without him coming out first he just has to walk all over me and everything he can get a grip on.

Lastly: I would like to state that I breed the bearded dragons for 3 reasons (most important reason from first to last)

-I breed for the hobby, its very rewarding to me knowing that I have the ability and knowledge to do this, and the space.

-I breed to support all 5 reptiles from the money the stores pay me

-I do it for a little profit, however the money I make from breeding bearded dragons is the last thing on my mind.

That said, I get $20-$30 per bearded dragon and my gf and I split the cheque when we get it in the mail (unfortunately they can't do cash).

How much is an average rate for wholesaling panther chameleons. Is it true females are worth more? The store told me $150-$200 per chameleon and this would greatly help the both of us profit wise (but like I said, hobby first and foremost). I don't care what the store sells it at ($399-$449 depending on age) because getting rid of all of them at the same time where there is multiple people to take care of them makes me feel better. My work schedule actually works out well with this, my gf works day shift and I work midnights. The lights come on when I get home @ 7:30AM and I feed at 9:30-10:30 then go to bed, when my gf goes to bed the lights are off.

When the time comes to incubate the eggs, what is the ideal temperature to incubate at and how long does it usually take YOU to have the eggs hatch out.

Are there any signs of anything wrong with the female when she is gravid? I won't be able to breed her with the male for quite awhile obviously but I am doing the research on it now so I don't have to when its too late.

Thankyou everyone

Welcome!
Great pics of the kids, esp your boy. very handsome.
Do a serach for Jannb. she has a blog on laying bins.

As for when to breed your girl, most wont breed before they are a a year old, and even then it can be early. so id say wait until she is at least a year and half to 2 years old.

Welcome to the forums. Nice looking cham family! Below is my egg laying/laying bin blog mentioned above. I would also recommend waiting until your female is over a year old and a good size before mating. If mated too young the female still needs calcium for her body that the eggs take away from her and can cause problem for your female.

Another link on breeding that you might find interesting.

welcome, to the forums, i too am in ontario and not too far away from you.
to help you with a few of your questions. search laying bin on the forum search it will give you tons of info but most used a bucket or binn with about 12inches of miost playsand.
female cham are generally worth less not more than the males.
i would wait till she is almost a year before breeder her, jmo
i too would like to know of a decent incubator, ( better then exoterra but not thousands )
to get a good idea on what chams are worth up here i would goto one on the reptile expos, i think there is one coming up in feb.
im kinda in a rush now but i hope that helps a bit, feel free to pm me

The earliest one I will probably be able to go to is in June this year at the ajax convention centre, I hope to see some people from here there and start networking. One of my goals in life is to have my own business (actual business not side business) and I think from my experience in breeding dragons, I'd love to expand to chameleons and turn this into a full time venture (on top of my full time job) but practice makes perfect.

Thanks guys for the link, I just checked this post after reading it already and it was a very good read, I will wait till she is a year and a half at least. Is it ok to show the female the male (her in tank, him outside) or will that really stress her out, I would never put the 2 together.

Thanks for the comments on the pictures :D They are 2 of my best pictures so far but I need to get better ones.

My GF and I are having serious relationship problems at the moment so if we split, I will take the 2 chameleons and she'll keep the dragons most likely, she'll argue its cause the chameleons are worth more but in reality, I'm the one who's doing all the work (breeding and taking care of all the reptiles, not just the chams). I have a lot of stuff on my plate right now with a potentially very serious and sought after position at my workplace as well.

BTW: I am in Pickering, Ontario

Forgot to ask, do they look healthy to you guys?

Also: Any idea what a very nice incubator is other than the exo-terra? I am very disappointed with their incubator (but their terrariums are very nice, all 4 tanks I have are ex's. I have a spare one as well that I don't use at the moment.

If the dragon breeding still works out very well like it has so far, I may register to be a vendor at the next expo that I go to and try and sell off lots @ $30-$40 each (a lot cheaper than everyone else there, however they're not a rarer type of dragon they're just the standard dragon (can't remember the type) but I wan't to breed the leather back with my female.

If you have experience with breeding dragons, is it true that you can only mate a female dragon with the same male per year? I have those 2 in the same tank and if I separate them they don't eat until they're back together. My GF won't let me breed the leather with her cause this is what she's read online, I don't know how true this is though.

$450 for a Female? Thank god you hagled him down.

They do look healthy to me. Is the female also a Ambliobe Panther like the Male?

Sorry about your relationship issues.
Life always gets in the way of life.. hah
and they look great! i dont see any issues.

i dont use an incubator, so i don tknow about that.

i will be starting a breeding project soon, my male veiled and male hoehnelli, but veileds dont normally need a incubator, and hoehnellis are live bearers... soo yea.

Just the sight of a male can cause the female to start an infertile clutch of eggs and I would not recommend that.

Very Nice Chams! Its great that you have sought this forum out to learn more since you are serious about breeding Chameleons in your future. There are some very experienced breeders that will help you learn what you need to know and what will be best for your Chams before, during and after care. The blogs Jann posted for you will be great information to learn from. Thank you so much for taking the time to learn before you jump. :)

lots of colors congrats on your new hobby

Thankyou, I love it and although its a lot of work (especially the bearded dragons) I take it all in and if anyone ever asks or gets freaked out by the 1000 crickets in the huge rubbermaid container (I need to get better at keeping crickets I seem to lose quite a lot). All I say to them is that reptiles are definitely not for everyone that it is a lot of work (when you have this many) and can turn into a very expensive hobby very quickly.

Just the sight of a male can cause the female to start an infertile clutch of eggs and I would not recommend that.

I did not know this, I showed him to her once and he started head bobbing so I immediately put him back in his tank. The female didn't rock the vines or gape her mouth or anything she just looked at him and continued eating. Maybe she's too young to understand?

I won't do it again (promise).

My male has been very slow for the last few days, unfortunately for about 4 days our basement (where they are) was pretty cold when all the lights were off because our furnace broke down and we just got it replaced. I'm sure he'll be fine but I kind of what to put him in a glass terrarium rather than this huge 175 gallon flexarium. Humidity in this environment where its cold and dry is very very difficult to maintain and nearly impossible. The female is happy.

BTW, I've had our male in front of a mirror numerous times and he's never freaked our or puffed up or anything, he just tries to climb on the mirror. I can't feed him without him crawling off his vine onto me. Check the video below (sorry for quality, its on an iphone4)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzHX...xt=C34f4c36UDOEgsToPDskI9JHMzhRIgzIqq_PHAzV5_

The end of the video also shows me feeding the same type of worm (a bit smaller) to the leatherback. Was that worm too big for him? I'm not sure but he goes nuts whenever he sees me bring one home (can't find a decent deal on them they're very expensive, $2.99 each for the large)

Update: After noticing an unsual amount of saliva from his mouth when drinking and not eating I went and picked up a new tank (thank god I had the funds) which is small but a nice size for him and he's doing much better, I've also noticed a 85% decrease in crickets that kept getting out of that damn mesh enclosure which was 175gallons.

He's eating and drinking tons again :D

Female is doing very well, can't wait to start breeding when she's old enough (earliest I can try is october)
