incubator DIY

i was thinking of constructing a incubator myself, since i cant afford to buy one.

i have a thick polystyorine box with a lid

and was thinking of getting a aquarium heater with a thermostat, filling the box half way with water, putting a tray above the water, and putting the eggs in a box onto the tray, would this work or would it be to humid?

I have done that. It cost me thousands in rotten eggs. I didn't work well for me. You could try a variation on that theme. Try heat tape or a UTH on the bottom, with a sealed vessel of water sitting over it . The water will act as a heat sync and stabilize and smooth any temp flucuations. 2 litre pop bottles sealed with water night work.

Using a thermostat would make it realitively accurate.

Good Luck .. post your DIY Incubator if you give it a go....

Here's what I use...
A people's heating pad (the type with three heat settings) placed under a frame. The frame consists of 2" x 2" wood pieces with metal screen attached over the frame. I place the incubation containers over the screen.

The frame can be raised on shims to get the temperature in the containers right.

I have hatches several species of chameleon eggs, coneheads, water dragons, two different species of turtle eggs, several species of geckos, etc. on these "incubators".

I have hatched Panther eggs in plastic shoe boxes on my basement shelf, The temp stays very close to 70 degrees, I also have used the standard Hovabator, you don't have to spend much to hatch eggs.

Hey Roguekiller ... I used exactly what you're describing to hatch my veileds. See this thread https://www.chameleonforums.com/veiled-chameleon-not-laying-6156/ ... and post #31 for pics and post #55 for description.

I didn't have any problems with my eggs rotting but then I think it's necessary to have some cardboard or something over the eggs to stop them from being dripped on. I dunno for sure but it worked for me as you can see from this thread .... https://www.chameleonforums.com/babies-hatched-11314/ !!

Good Luck!!

Dyesub Dave. :D
