Into and a few questions

First off I want to say thanks to everyone whose posts I read when we got our vailed. What a great site and what excellent information on care, equipment, and feeding I have gotten from here. Also, what an excellent idea the DIY-Cricket Cup made by eat2muchrice is. I will be making one soon.

A client of my wife, didn’t want her chameleon any longer so we took her. She is supposed to be about a year old and seems to be in great health. After reading about enclosures, I purchased a Reptibreeze 2x2x4 screened enclosure and moved her out of the fish tank she came with. I cut and dried, on my wood stove, some old Concord grape vines and used them as the framework for the fake vines. I am currently working on a wooden canopy to mount the lighting into and also have a place to attach the strip power cord to, so that it will be up above the MistKing misting nozzles. I also covered the back of the enclosure with a 2x4 sheet of vinyl fish tank backer. I did this to prevent the water from the MistKing nozzles from getting all over the wall and giving an astatically pleasing backing.

Since my vailed loves to eat kale, I have been putting small pieces on the branches. The problem is when I put several pieces on the branch and she eats some or walks by the pieces fall off the branches fall the bottom of the enclosure. So I decided to make a little tray to put the kale on. I wanted it to blend in with the environment, so I used a piece of coconut shell. I drilled several holes in the bottom and 2 more on the side to screw it to a grape vine. So far it has worked awesome. When the mist system is on, a little water collects and then it just drips out and the kale is left still in the coconut shell. The best part is that it doesn’t stick out like a plastic cup would.

The next thing is to get a Pothos started from one of my wife’s plants and plant it in a pot at the bottom of the enclosure to help with keeping humidity up. Unfortunately my house is very dry; around 34%. I will also check my local Lowes hardware to see if they have any Pothos. I also plan on removing the sub-straight and doing something else.

SO, now I have a question or two. I am a little confused about dusting my crickets. Right now, I dust my crickets every day with a calcium powder with vitamin D3. I have read that I should only dust with calcium 2 times a week and without vitamin D3 and vitamin D3 should only be used a few times a month. Can someone please clarify for me a proper regimen for dusting crickets? What vitamins should be used and how often? How often should I feed mealworms?

Please comment on my setup if you will. I am always open to suggestions to make my set up more conducive to my chameleon’s needs. I will post some photos when I figure out how to do so.

Jay

Welcome to the forums and congrats on your veiled. I keep veiled a along with several other species. I recommend lightly dusting her feeders with calcium just about everyday. From the one picture it looks like she has or has had some MBD. If you could post some more photos her her that would be helpful. I also recommend using D3 and a multi Vit. twice a month. I'm attaching my blog below for new keepers and a few links about females. They can and very often do lay eggs without a male even being around so it's very important to provide them with a laying bin at all times after reaching 5 months old.

Also a clothespin works great to hold their greens.

Thank you for your reply. I’m not sure of her age nor if she has had MBD in the past. How do I know if she has it now? If she does, what do to counter it? I am unsure of the age of her UVB blub. I was planning on buying a new one today. What type and size should I get?

SO I should be dusting with just plain calcium regularly then dust with D3 and a multi vitamin, only twice a month correct?

I will try to post additional photos later today.

The UVB tube lights are the best really. Obviously you'll need a new light unit to house it instead of your current dome lamp.

Plain calcium without D3 every feeding yes. Then with D3 every two weeks and multivitamins every other two weeks in between the calcium D3 cycle.

Here's some good info about MBD.

Yes, this is correct.

JamesBryan,
Thanks. I picked up a Zilla light fixture and a Reptisun 5.0 UVB bulb. I also picked up vitamins, but couldn't find just plain calcium powder without D3. I guess I will have to mail order that. Is there a problem with continuing to dust with the calcium with D3?

I also picked up a Pothos at HomeDepot. I know I have to wash the leaves and stems with soapy water but what should I do about the soil it was planted in?

Jannb,
after reading the info you linked and looking at the photos, I now see what's what. that's why I put the rush on getting the new UVB light.

I would not use d3 more than twice a month because it can build up in their system and cause gout and other health issues. My local pet stores do not carry and chameleon supplies. I order everything online.

Well new light is set up. I have mail ordered the calcium sans the vitamin D3. My chameleon is doing much better and basking more under the new UVB bulb. She seems to be standing up a bit more and her color is a bright light green as opposed to a darker green. Would the new UVB bulb be working already?

Yes, it will have a positive effect after a few days

Well I just wanted to give you all an update on my Chameleon’s situation. Since replacing the UVB light, I noticed she is much more mobile. She regularly moves around her enclosure including coming down to the bottom of the enclosure. Her colors are much brighter as well. I have switched over to a calcium only dusting for crickets and will use D3 and vitamins as suggested. I am looking for an aesthetically pleasing pot to replant my Pothos in. I also am planning to rinse all the potting soil it came in off the roots and replant with fresh soil. Can anyone tell me what is the best potting soil to use?

Also, using eat2muchrice’s idea, I created my own cricket feeder. I used a left over piece of vinyl pool fence, which was 2x4x10. Inside I used a piece of plastic mesh I purchased at Michaels Crafts. This thing works great. What an ingenious idea it is. I want to personally say thank you to eat2muchrice for posting his idea for all to benefit from.

Thank you all so much for your help,

Jay
