IMG_8170.JPG Hi. I'm new to the whole chameleon thing. But I have learned and read a lot and yesterday I got my first Veiled chameleon. And I have his setup all done and know what I'm doing with that. My question is. Is he healthy? Does he seem to have good colors? How many crickets should he eat a day? He HATES mealworms. Is that normal?

He looks good to me, hes probably gonna be a little darker since hes new and probably stressed out. My chameleon is about 8 months old and eats about 20 crickets a day, to give you an estimate, and some chameleons are just picky eaters, my chameleon doesent like phoenix worms.

What's the reason for the bowl of water? Is it just a catch basin for a dripper? Or is it for him to drink from? If so, he won't. They don't recognize standing water as a drinking source.

Lol, yes the bottom big one is just a catch for the dropper. Because I have no real plants yet. And the top tiny cup if for his food.

You should just set the cage ontop of a bin, and start drilling, or get a drainage tray from dragon strand.

Mine is around 7 months. That's what the pet store said anyways. He's eating around 12-15 crickets a day. Is he eating enough ??. And I don't have any more money for anything at all. Maybe I'll get more stuff for Christmas, lol. Is the bowl not fine for now? What's the problem with it? Other than it being ugly. Soon I'll have the dripper run into a live ficus

The primary problem with bowls is they tend to get very dirty, if you are feeding crickets they will drown by the dozen, and it's an unnecessary source of bacteria because they won't drink from them anyway. I don't have to use one in my females cage because the drips keep the dirt in the laying bin moist but in my male's cage, if I water him heavier than normal or to the point of needing a catch dish I fold a hand towel in the bowl so no feeders drown, it raises humidity well and it also seems to stay much cleaner than a bowl of water.

Cham looks good to me...
If he often sleeps on the mesh I would give him some more vertical branches since they (atleast mine) seem to prefer to sleep that way.

@Alin how did you attach everything to your screen cage? Mine came in this week and I'm curious what the best way is to keep everything secure without tearing the cage.

If you can offer some large leaves (pothos work well) near the top for him to take cover under he may sleep there at night. It will also offer him a place to escape from the lighting if needed. The larger leaves will also collect water droplets so there will be more opportunities for drinking.
