Is this wood safe?

The title says it all. I plan on building a cham cage for a veiled and was looking at wood. Is this safe?

Thanks

Okay so as far as a sealed cage made from it, IDK. However Pine is considered bad and can cause respiratory infections in animals. Now they say could be pine spruce or fir.

Honestly I would stick with birch just to be safe, it may be okay and it may not. I have heard both, but why save pennies and take a chance?

There is nothing wrong with using kiln dried pine lumber for a cage frame. Fresh green pine or cedar (as in bedding or shavings) will release the aromatics that can be irritating. Regardless what wood you use you'll have to seal it very well to protect it from water rot.

You know not to derail OPs thread. But since you seem way more knowledgeable about this than me. I live in the moutains of AZ, and my house is surrounded by 100ft pine trees (so sadly I cant get branches from outside :().

Anyway should I use a hepa filter in the cham room to prevent the respiratory infection? does it carry to that extent?

??? I'm confused now. What's in your cham room that is a concern for a respiratory infection? The wood?

The air, I am dead center in the middle of one of the largest pine tree forests in the US lol. There is literally miles of 100 foot pine trees all around me. The name of the town I live in is Pinetop lol.

Here this is literally a block from my house.

So you are worried about all the surrounding pines triggering a respiratory infection in your indoor chams? Don't be. What can irritate chams would be fresh cut sappy lumber in a confined space like a damp cage.

Got it :) thanks :).

What sealents would you reccomend?

Miniwax polycrylic (will need to be re coated every year or so). Cheap and easy though, also drys fast

Or

Marine epoxy, not cheap not easy not very fast drying. Will last for pretty much ever.

Oh and then GE doors and Windows (100% silicon NO MOLD INHIBITORS OR Anything) for the cracks and seams. Or aquarium grade silicon.
