i have a few questions

they don't have babies unless they are pregnant , sense they have live young.?

how big do females get?

how big do males get?

how long do they live for?

are they aggressive?

I have a female and a male so i think i'll be able to help you out :)
First off you're correct they only give birth if mated, unlike panthers and other chameleons.

They'll both average about 9-10 inches, the largest i've seen here in hawaii was 12" straight but that's rare (at least in hawaii). My female is 9 inches and my male averages 9 as well. Going from nose to tail.

They can live from around 5-8 years, but a well kept one can probably exceed that by some amount (just guessing).

I've only owned Jacksons chameleons and none of them have been aggressive. The worst it had ever gotten was my female puffed up at me for putting her back in her cage. They're very curious and love free ranging.


I've only cared for Jacksons Chameleons for about 6 months so i'm not the most experienced. There are a lot more experienced Jacksons keepers but I hope I was a help :) PM me if you want to know anything else.

But Id like to add a couple things-
Females are typically smaller than males.

There are several sub species of jacksons, the most common being xanths.

Female xanths do not have horns, but can on occasion have a small rostral (nose) horn tip.

They love water, love it love it.



If a horn is broken, it wont normally grow back to the regular pointy shape.

they require lower temps, higher humidity, and less supplementation than other species.

If you can get a hold of CB (captive breed) then you should be okay (my opinion) but you should think about senegals I then went to veiled then panther. I never had a jackson before.

the subspecies xantholophus are commonly available as captive bred, but A LOT of them available through online sellers (especially those offered on kingsnake.com) are wild caught. the other subspecies - mt. kenyan (jacksonii jacksonii) and mt. meru (jacksonii merumontanus) are rarely available as captive bred.

my two jax yawn all the time. so does miss lilys monty.

also, i read a post somewhere on here... dont remember where. that a female was dropping slugs for some reason.

To clarify:
While it varies from the different sub-species, xanth females can have all three horns.

Those two tiny nubbins by her eyes dont count as a horn! it counts as a pimple! haha.

And I know shell win cuz she has my awesome little male hoe kermit, who wants to get laid so badly, but chloe wont have anything to do with him! poor boy.

Ill post pix on friday! when i actualy have time to take them out
