Juvenille Veiled Chameleon - Possible Eye Infection

Hi everyone!

Yesterday I posted a thread yesterday telling about my Chameleon having an eye that is crusted shut. Today I gave her two baths and on the second bath the crust finally fell out. Now it is swollen. However, I am giving her foods that will help with her eye. I gave her spinach today (she hasn't taken much interest in it). I read that they need beta carotene. We have Sweet Potato baby food at our house, and I would like to know if it is safe to give her that? Also, is there anything I can do to help with the swelling in her eye.

***The crust is out of her eye, but she cant really open it due to the swelling***

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Kntonoff,

I have left a reply on your previous thread which will interest you depending on the type of UVB bulb you are using. My Veiled suffered from the same thing as yours is doing now.

Thank you, I am using a 50 WATT Neodymium Basking Bulb which provides EVA/UVB lighting and Radiant heat . I leave it on for about 10-12 hours a day.

Hmmm I'm not entirely familiar with the combination bulbs that give UVB and heat together I have to say. So I'm not sure if your bulb could be the cause of the problem or not in this case. Certainly if you'd be using a compact UVB bulb I'd have advised you to get rid of it asap. It would definitely be worth you doing more research into the type of bulb you are using though just in case. The bulb was the last thing I'd have thought of to be causing the problem with my Veiled's eyes but in the end that's what it turned out to be in my case.

I really hope you are able to get to the bottom of it soon and your Cham's eyes improve :)

If more crust develops, then that means there is some type of infection going on. You will need to get an antibiotic ointment for that or maybe an oral one. If the swelling does not go down, she needs to be looked at by a vet. Feeding her spinach is not going to clear up her eye. Do not feed the baby food. If she cannot focus her eyes to shoot for her food, then hand feed her bugs.

Thank you, I will definitely look into your advice. I have fed her spinach and Sweet Potato baby food, because she can't really find her food in her tank right now, She ate a lot of Sweet Potato's and about 2 bites of spinach (As I said she wasn't that interested in it) and she is resting now, so hopefully it helps and doesn't result in a vet visit.

If she has an infection, those food are not going to help, she will need medication. If she had something stuck in her eye and it has resolved itself, it might just be swollen from the irritation. You will just have to see how it looks over the next couple days.
