Keeping Parsons outdoors

Hi all. I've always only lurked, but have had two Parsons chams for 4 and five years now, raised from CBB European imports. I'm moving from the Bay Area in CA to Broward County Florida soon and wanted to connect with anyone in that area for advice about keeping Parsons outdoors in the Fort Lauderdale area. . . .

My guys get out whenever its warm and sunny here, but SF is waaay too cool for outdoor living for Parsons. Any advice or guidance would be appreciated.

You would be surprised I have heard and seen Calumma parsonii parsonii breeding groups living outside most of the year in the San Francisco Bay Area. Good luck in Florida.

In some parts of the Bay Area, but probably not right in the SF cloud forest. :)

They are out today, but when the sun don't shine, it's pretty chilly here on the coast.

I think it could be done for about 3/4 of the year. The lack of suitable Real Estate though would not give you a big enough back yard to actually keep your Calumma parsonii parsonii or other Calumma outside 24/7 that long in San Francisco.

No again Mark Twain (do not quote me about this) stated that one of the coldest days he ever spent was a summer day in San Francisco. San Francisco is capable of being extremely chilly place especially for 1/one of the sunshine states. However it does have coastal moisture/cloud cover that would be perfect for montane chameleons.

Have you had any luck breeding, egg laying, hatching?

My younger male Parson's

Just thought I'd send a photo of my younger male Parsonii coming in from his outdoor cage for the evening. He's finishing a shed.

First time attaching a picture for me. Hope I did it right.

Where did you live in San Francisco? That is amazing that you have enough space in your backyard big enough for an enclosure for your Calumma parsonii parsonii especially in the city.

I still live in San Francisco. I not only have room for my Parsonii but lots of birds, including breeding pairs of toucans and other softbills. San Francisco is full of surprises, but it's cold.

Tomorrow I'll attach a photo of my other, older Parsonii.

I started with Parsonii in Japan, in the 80s--parasite infested, very sick wc imports. So it was great to find CB babies when I moved back to the States.

Welcome to the forums! I live north of Fort Lauderdale and my husband built special climate control rooms for our parsonii. It is HOT here and I personally don't even keep my veileds and panthers out except for a few hours in the mornings. Parsons need a cool down in the winter months and it never cools down here except maybe a couple days every now and then in the winter. You can see the rooms here:

The homes that I have gone to in San Francisco did not offer much of a backyard for chameleons or birds. I look forward to pictures of your other male Calumma parsonii parsonii.
