I have a naked rat story... My son was about 5 and went to the pet store with me, they happened to be feeding one of the big snakes. Corey LOST HIS MIND. So the brilliant kid working told him to hang on, he'd save the rat. He took the feeder rat out and around the back, and came back with a very sweet naked rat. He told Corey that he had to take the rat's clothes off because the snake got him dirty, but Corey could keep him since he saved his life... My son carried that pet rat around for 5 years.

It really is! It gets easier, but when they're little it's a struggle. I had a 3 year old "vegetarian" daughter for months when she found out what meat was. She wouldn't even touch eggs. She'd eat chicken nuggets, though. Somehow those didn't count.
