well , its now cold in Ohio but I found this last grasshopper in the fire wood- Max wont get another until spring

really ? noise - I kept grasshoppers all summer, and never heard a peep ? ( or a cheep ) I will take noise any day over cricket stink

They make this buzzing noise that I can't stand, kinda sounds like a cicada. You're right about the stink though...those damn crickets. gotta move away from those...

Thats why I just dont use crickets. No thanks, I dont deal with stink or noise.

You should make another attempt to breed grasshoppers again. Grasshoppers during the winter is a luxury for your chameleons! Grasshoppers for for my Parsonii brumation period is a huge plus!

I never thought of catching grasshoppers. How safe is it? I mean, Im sure you wouldn't do anything that would be dangerous. But like for me, who lives in a neighborhood, would there be a danger of any chemicals?

I live in the out in the corn fields - lol if you live where others may use chemicals, I would be leery - but I feed wild food all summer - and even feed my feeders " wild" dandelions and hay from the fields - I know some don't , won't , feed wild - my guys get all I ( and they ) can catch

the grasshoppers I use, are the bright green ones, they are about 1/4 " tp 1/2" long - my chams go NUTS for them - they do not stink AT ALL - I never heard them make a noise - and I had 100's of them in a screen cage, maybe they were a dif/ kind - the only noise I ever heard was if one jumped, THEY ALL JUMPED I saved a bunch for breeding, but kept feeling sorry for the chams, and fed them off- lol so now I have to wait until spring

I would only do it in a place where you know for a fact there is no pesticide use. I sometimes do it, but I don't recommend it to others...yea I'm a hypocrite. There are risks involved that's why (pesticides and parasites)

The only place I get them is deep in the ravine behind my place when I go to collect vines. Absolutely no reason for anyone to use pesticides down there, and I don't do it often. My chams do love them though.

I'll try next spring. I'll try with mantis again too....Hopefully, it'll work out this time.

They do love the hoppers. Probably the best way to get chams to hand feed.

do u feed the hoppers a day or two before feeding them to your cham to make sure that there is no bad stuff in the system like lets say tomato leafs or something like that? I live in florida so its year round for me but i have never tryed before =) Might have to give it a try

I THINK you have a hopper down there who is toxic - its called a oober or goober or lubber - something like that- I do think those are NOT ok to feed - just be sure if you feed wild, be sure WHAT you are feeding them- wild caught bugs ( imho) are a great food source, as long as its done safely - it may not be Fla - but I know there is a kind down south you can not feed if I am not mistaken - maybe someone can give more incite on this -

It feels like it's winter here already!!
I dread it more as I get older

It means all live feeders are harder to get and harder to keep alive without extra heating mats

I am dreading receiving 2000 dead cricks via FedEx from Ghann's because of the cold weather.

I can breed them okay, I just cant keep them alive past about 3 weeks

I never see any grasshoppers around, but I dont really look very hard either!
