LED lighting…?

Hey All,

I've been researching for the panther chameleon I'm hoping to get in the next two months, and I've seen a LOT of discussion about lighting.

The one thing I've seen very little about is LED lighting as a source of UVB. The most I've seen is a post from a few years ago about UVB LEDs being for sale, but that they were bogus.

Do you folks know of any developments in the field of LED lighting?

As far as I am aware, LED's are not capable of giving off UVB. All of the grow lights that I have seen use LED to provide light and florescent to provide the UVB. I could be wrong, but the only use of LEDs that I have seen has been for visible light.

Hmm…Makes sense. I guess it was just hopeful thinking. I keep seeing these awesome LED lights that are used on saltwater tanks to light sensitive corals and such. I mean that's apples and oranges, but still.

Hopefully there are some advances in LED technology someday. I'd love to use those bright, energy efficient little suckers more if I can.

Yes, the quality of light is great, just no UVB.

You are correct, there are no UVB LEDS developed ATM. The ones that are for reef tanks are not the correct spectrum and will not produce the required UVB.

Agreed, UV LED's that are produced for reef aquariums do not emit any UVB, they are simply designed to help make corals fluoresce. The low ~400nm spectrum that they emit really makes the colors of many corals POP. Unfortunately not real useful for our chams. T5HO is definitely the best, most efficient source of UVB available at the moment.
