Little guy having an unusual shed?

Hi everyone,

I've got a 6-month-old (maybe 5?) male veiled chameleon, and he's just now experiencing his second shed. It looks different from his first.

His first shed was 6 weeks ago, and it looked as normal as any shed I've ever seen in a reptile: he basically "unzipped" from tail to head over the course of a few days.

This time was different. His shed seemed typical for a few days - starting at the head this time, then his limbs. But then, he basically stopped shedding altogether for like two weeks. My wife and I noticed he had shed the top of his back / spine, but the rest of his body hadn't. Now, he's got a line of dead skin that keeps widening, but it doesn't seem to be flaking off the same way as last time:

His head has been looking a bit pale since he shed it too.

Cage is typically around 80F in basking zone, 69-71ish at the bottom. Humidity starts out around 72% first thing in the morning with a mist, then declines to about 30% throughout the day. He then gets misted again 1 hour before bed, and that process starts over, but my morning the humidity is in the 40%s because of lights-out. 12 hours of light + heat, 12 hours of darkness.

What do you think? Is this normal?

Nothing looks out of the ordinary to me. As they get older, they begin to shed in ‘parts’. They may shed their limbs one week. Then another week or two shed their head. Then their back etc… as long as any stuck shed is not constructing blood flow, just let it be. My guys has flakes that stick around sometimes. Plus if they get misted and it hits that shed, it will stick because they are dry shedders.

That is a normal shed. I reccomend keeping your male Chamaeleo calypatratus well hydrated, fed (with supplements) and allowed to bask under a quality UVA and UVB light and the rest of the shed should shed normally. That may require some time to happen though. Partial sheds I think normally means someting with the husbandry is just a bit off, such as water, food suplments and UV lighting.

Digits crossed your male Chamaeleo calypatratus sheds soon.

Best Regards
