Loose turds

I have had a veiled cham for 2 weeks that is now about 5 months old.

My veiled cham seems to be fine otherwise, but it every now and then when it takes a crap, some loose, partially clear and partially white goo comes out with the poo. By looking at the poo, the crickets seem to be well digested.

Could this be a sign of some sickness, or has it been getting just too much water?

I was slightly concerned that it didn't see it drinking by itself even once, so what I did was I gave it every now and then some extra water by letting it drip slowly into it's mouth through a straw while it was opening it's mouth while basking, or when it was munching on crickets.

I also use moss to gather the excess water drops spat around by the fogger, and it seems to have develloped an apetite for the wet moss.

the partially clear/white gelatinous looking stuff that comes out with his poop is his urates or pee. that is good that they are white it helps tell you that he is getting plenty of water in his diet. it's a good thing!!!!

on that note, how are you watering him, are you using and automatic mister or hand misting him? also, do you use a dripper with him?

i never noticed my veiled drinking h20 either till i put a potho in there and would spray it the h20 stays on there nicely and he goes right to the leaves n drinks well bites ( lol) the h20 right up, taking some leaves along for the ride of course, which he loves as well. :)

I have a fogger in a pint glass that spits out droplets. My previous cham was totally fine with this kind of drinking system, and every now and then I saw it drinking the droplets that were dripping down the outer edges.

I spray the terrarium with water 2-3 times a day, but it doesn't seem to take any interest in the water droplets hanging from the leaves.

The only times I have actually seen it drink droplets are when I spray the glass walls of it's terrarium. It really goes after the drops it can see going downwards, but it never goes after the drops that are staying still. I was wondering if the Exoterra waterfall could be the answer? Does anyone have experience with things like the Exoterra waterfall? or should I just get a regular dripper?

In the last week or so I was giving it water with a straw. In other words, when I would feed it crickets, I would fill a straw up with water, and slowly pour out the drops into it's mouth. It would then just continue drinking the water that came out of the straw.

Yesterday I saw it take a massive crap, and there was ALOT if colorless gelatinous goo which had some bright white goo in it too.

You would be best to forget the waterfall as chams have a tendency to poo in them also feeders fall in and drown, then along comes your Cham for a drink. Enough said. Breeding ground for bacteria. I would stick to misting 3-4 times a day. I take it that you are dripping water on to his nose with the straw to stimulate drinking?

I am a beginner with chameleons but if there was one thing I learned from my bio class it was uric acid. Birds and reptiles do not form liquidy pee like we do, because our pee contains urea. In eggs, urea can be toxic and deadly for developing birds/reptiles, so they have uric acid instead which is not liquidy and appears white, and it also is not toxic inside the egg. Ever notice bird poop kind of splattered white? That's the uric acid. As long as it stays white he is good - if it turns yellow/orange he is dehydrated.

Not really to his nose, more like to his lips, if his mouth is open while basking, or if he is munching on crickets. Then he closes his mouth, but opens it again and starts touching the straw with his toungue to get more drops.

If his mouth is open while basking he is telling you he is too hot. What is the temp where he is basking?

Hello, I will put my comments in red just to make them easier to see.

Could this be a sign of some sickness, or has it been getting just too much water? For chams unless you are drowning him, there is never too much water. But he should be able to get away from the water if he wants.

You can drip water on his nose and see if he will drink. Dripping it in his mouth could choke him

I also use moss to gather the excess water drops spat around by the fogger, and it seems to have develloped an apetite for the wet moss.
A cham eating moss is bad. It can get caught in his intestines and kill him. Also moss in the cage is bad it breeds bacteria

Some where you ask about a water fall or a drinking dish, both are like the moss, they breed bacteria, which is bad for you cham. Most of us keep the bottom of out cages bare, it is easy to clean, you can see the poop right away to clean it, and there in nothing for the cham to get hurt on.

I know I have missed stuff and these are just my opinions, but if you have any questions, I am just a PM away.
