Hey all!, Im pretty new to these forums but I've been taking care of reptiles since I was a kid. A year ago I purchased a Malagasy giant from a local reptile show. Instant chemistry with him. The man who sold him to me dropped the price because he couldn't get anyone to buy him. Upon opening up the cage he would huff and puff and flare up, and the breeder kept reaching in and pulling him out with no warning. Poor guy was stressed, but I got him out of there and he's been going strong ever since.
I Let him free range whenever I can and leave his cage open most days with a bridge made of bamboo that leads out of his cage into a 7 foot tall ficus . He spends most of his days in there happy as a clam. As for his diet, I was advised that Oustaleti were purely insectivores but was surprised to see how keenly he took to dandelions and collard greens. But was even more surprised to see him eating (his now favorite treat) bananas and strawberries!
Apart from being a unique eater , His temper has all but disappeared . In the mornings when his lights go on he crawls to the front of his cage and waits there for me to unzip the front. Once the cage is opened he will reach out for my hand and crawl on. He lets me pet him and enjoys light strokes under his chin and along the side of his belly. I handle him for at least an hour every day both with my hands in his cage with him and while he's roaming . Yesterday I took him out to his Lilac bush and let him play in there for a bit. Pics on the way!
