Material and mesh size for enclosure tops

For DIYers out there, what material and mesh size are you using for the tops of the enclosures to maximize uvb transmission?
Are galvanized 1/2"x 1/2" square mesh safe?
I also see vinyl square mesh of same size but I'm concerned the vinyl will become brittle with the uvb bulb directly on top of it.
Suggestions?

Galvanized wire mesh is better for the cage top. It will hold more weight (if you have to rest a fixture or a cross brace for hanging plant pots on it) and won't melt or burn from basking bulb heat. The mesh size is fine for UV transmission. I would take a wire brush to the mesh to wear off any sharp burrs that might cut a cham's footpad. Most chams spend a little time clinging to it in their daily travels.
