Mbd

Last week I noticed my veiled cham couldn't use his legs when going after crickets. I took him to a vet, and she basically said he looks calcium deficient. She didn't want to inject him with calcium or run blood test since she said it would stress him out. SO she basically said the UVB bulb I have must not be producing enough, and I should dust non-phospherous calcium on his food every day. This was 3 days ago. He just sits at the bottom of his cage now. He cant climb the bush he loves to sit in, nor lift his head. Although I went and bought a 2nd UVB bulb, and giant thing of calcium, I really think that maybe I should go back to the vet and get him an injection. I can't bare to watch him drag himself around the bottom of the cage. His front legs are already slightly bowing so Im pretty sure its MBD. What should I do? Male veiled. Bought him a month ago, and petsmart just said he was a juvenile.
I was handling him every other day, but now Im afraid to touch him.
Feeding him 8 crickets a day, unless petsmart is out (which is often) ,then 3 superworms.
Just bought a bottle of the powder zoo meds repti calcium.
I have a zoo med big dripper and I mist his cage a few times a day. I see him drink in the morning.
He was pooping every day up until 2 weeks ago. He's only gone twice in the 2 weeks (vet also gave me liquid lax to put on his food-still hasnt gone).
His cage is glass with a screen top. It's longer than tall. Big viney bush on the one side. Long bendy branch that weaves up, down and around the cage. And a branch he usually perches on, on the other side of the cage.
Just went out and got the Zilla slimline T8 fluorescent uvb bulb. Along with the original round uvb bulb.
In the spot he sits, its 85-90 degrees.
Someone please help :(

Welcome to the forums! I'm sorry your little guy is having problems. Here is some more information on Metabolic Bone Disease. Metabolic bone disease takes a long time to develop, and conversely takes a long time to resolve. Correcting your husbandry and providing adequate calcium, nutrition through gutloading, and UVB is the first critical step.

I don't believe MBD is reverseable but maybe someone else can set me straight on that. Your cham should be able to get within 6" of that 5.0 UVB bulb. The strength of the bulb greatly diminishes with distance. Calcium supplement with out D3 everyday and with D3 every two weeks. Buy crickets buy the hundreds and keep well fed in a rubbermaid container - that way you won't be running out and will have nutrient food items on hand all the time.

Damage caused by metabolic bone disease cannot be reversed completely in severe cases but the disease process can be stopped so there is not further damage and the bones can heal if proper UVB is supplied and the imbalance of dietary calcium is addressed.

Hello, and welcome to this fantastic forum :) We have several vets here who all give freely of their time to help out people and chameleons. The vets here all have a particular interest in chameleons, so as far as I am concerned any advice they give is the best possible.
Have you seen the basic caresheet for Veiled chameleons (and the other resources) that have recently been added to the forum? - https://www.chameleonforums.com/care/caresheets/veiled/

Also, we all love to see pictures of lizards, and they would help us to see your situation better :)
