Mis-treated Bearded Dragon.

I really need some insight.. My friend has a bearded dragon. It is almost a year old. It's the size of a healthy 5 month old Bearded Dragon.. Well when I was checking on it, the enclosure was full of dirty defecated on paper towels that haven't been changed out in months. It had no dry bearded dragon food (he gives it Flucker's brand food with red pellets and freeze dried mealworms and crickets in them) and it was empty. He just got back from being in Minnesota for a month.. It had a water dish in the enclosure that was bone dry. And looked like it was dry for quite sometime. It was very wrinkly (also because it was shedding) But it seemed to be very dehydrated. It looked very underweight and malnurished. It has never been supplemented and doesn't have the correct UVB lights that a Bearded Dragon needs. It has a basking light.. that is it and I doubt it ever goes off so it doesn't get to thermoregulate like a regular Bearded Dragon should. It hardly gets crickets or mealworms or superworms. like it should. Or any veggies. What should I do. I am very concerned about this animal. I am trying to get him to let me take it in while he is gone again, but haven't had any responses. I want to get that Bearded Dragon a better home even if it is with me. That thing deserves a better life. Not a crappy one that it didn't earn.
So if anyone can help me out that would be great!
Thanks so much!
Zac

Be blunt with them and tell them the bearded dragon is being mistreated and you feel you could do a better job. Chances are they don't care about it so probably wouldn't mind seeing it go.

I will try that. He is in Minnesota for the next few days again. At least it has water and food again. I was making sure it had food and water.

Anyone else have insight? I was told to contact the Humane Society to rescue the dog and cat living there. They are hoarders with a roach infestation.. The dog hardly gets water, and when it does, it is an ice cream pale that is dirty and filled with water and dead floating cock roaches. They lost their cat back in 2010 and finally caught it and threw it into a room, that has no A/C and goes to the bathroom everywhere. I didn't see any food or water for it. he also has 3 Red Eared Slider Turtles in a 37 gallon tall tank. it has less than three inches of water and no light for basking. I didn't see any basking area this time.. so what should I do?! I need to help these animals out of this hell hole!

Call both the Humane society and animal control in Watertown. Someone should help out. If that fails write a letter to the local newspaper.

laurie I was awaiting your response. The Animal Control can't do much according the pet store owner. She knows a lot about rescues since she is combined with the shelter. I will call the shelter tomorrow when it is open if not Monday. Thanks so much.

I would definitely call The local animal control or the SPCA if you have them where you live.

I wish we has SPCA here, but South Dakota doesn't have much for resources like those that I know of.

Warn your friend first, it's only fair. If he fails to respond contact relevant authorities......there are no other options if it's as you wrote it.

I have warned him many times. I have told him he needs to put his act together in order to successfully keep these animals. He says yeah I know but he doesn't do it.. I have given him brand new UVB lights and he doesn't use them. I have given him supplies and food and he doesn't utilize any of them.

So the question is what are you waiting for? If you call he is going to know it's you, because you're probably the only one who knows.

In this country we'd call the police and they'd send the RSPCA. Don't delay any longer unless you'd be endangered by it. And get your supplies back - he should be banned from keeping animals anyway......

prolly not the correct way but EFF it... just take it. seriously doubt he will even care it is gone.

did I mention they have some mental problems? My mom worked with his sane sister and she made me "become friends" with him.. I am going to be taking them as soon as possible. I can't take in the dog and cat, but I am able to take in the turtles and the bearded dragon.

I rescued 2 Beardies and a red ear slider from similar conditions, the turtles' shell had soft spots all over and the Beardies had no lights, or water source or food, ect... It was awesome to see these animals bounce back after a few months of proper care!! Get them outa there!

Well, whatever you do is up to you as you can see the situation......
but just remember that vigilante rescuing is just as illegal as neglecting animals in the eyes of the law.
Even if you save the reptiles it still should be reported if you think the dog and cat are being neglected.

Aren't RES turtles considered illegal to keep in the state of Washington? Or is that Oregon? I am glad they survived. I don't know if the humane society is open still today, they don't do much on the weekends. I will try for Monday at rescuing the animals.

Yeah... I say take action post haste.... I would be direct and up front about the level of care being sub standard... and to be blunt.. it wont change anything ... people who mistreat animals dont change because of a rational conversation... Sounds like you're doing the right thing... thankfully someone will... best of luck... keep us posted please

I will keep you all posted on updates. I am going to be talking with him on Monday. That is my off day so, I can go see him.
