Mouth rot

One of my male chams developed mouth rot so over the weekend I took it up on myself to find the best reptile vet around as everywere if been before in the past are useless, anyway I managed to find a great vet with 20 years experience caring for the reps at London zoo, anyway she agreed with what i thought it to be and have him a injection aswell as a baytril treatment to give daily for 10 days an a ointment to rub apply to the sore twice daily.i caught it at the right time before it affected the bone so hopefully he will make a full recovery, I will update you all

Is it possible for you to list the medications that were used and perscribed beyond the baytril. I always like to see other vets approaches to things.
Best of luck!!!

Glad that you caught it in time and its being treated. I am wondering...I have never seen mouth rot before - are you able to post a picture so in order to educate me? I would appreciate it!! ;)

It's nice to see someone who takes chameleon care seriously enough to get their cham to a vet without hesitation once a problem is noticed.
Hope your cham heals quickly.

Thanks but tbh I think anyone who owns a Cham or any animal or reptile should do that as when you buy the animal you take on the responsibility to care for him/her

I completely agree but if you read the health forum regularly, your heart will break with the numerous tales of unwillingness to get vet care for chams that you know will die without it.

How true is this? I love to help out others who are having troubles but it does get frustrating and sometimes I just have to leave the Health Clinic forum or I'll have to buy stock in Kleenex tissue! Gotta stop wearing my heart on my sleeve when it comes to chameleons! :(

I just wish I had a vet in my area I fully trust. I think a lot of people are hesitant to take their chams to the vet because of bad experiences coupled with big bills.

I had a cham develop a skin issue during a shed. The vet first was going to give me baytril (anti biotic) and then switched it to intraconazale (anti fungal) without taking any cultures or tests. He also plucked a few pieces of dry skin off by hand. The cham only lasted 2 intraconazale treatments before he died. I still have no idea what killed him or why he was sick. The bill was about $300

You are surely right about some people--I had it happen years ago-- but if that's the case the solution is to find another vet, even if it means a less convenient location to go to.

Have you checked the list of ARAV vets and others listed here?

AND

You can also check to see if other Kansas chamkeepers are on the forum and, with luck, perhaps one or more of them has suggested a trusted vet that isn't too far away or if you're close to the border, perhaps there's one nearby in the next state.

Look at this thread for details:

Lastly, you can always start a new thread stating the area you're in and asking for a recommendation.
