this is an Australia walking Stick. It is nearing half grown.

She was a complete surprise. She was in with my regular indian walking sticks. Once I called and found out what I had and did a little research, I find I like her. She looks like an alien to me so that is what I named her. She lives with all my other sticks.

How long do sticks live?
I think it depends on the type of stick and their diet. I find mine seem to live about 2 years on a good diet. I have trained mine to live on ficus trees.

I am awful, I love playing with my sticks. I feel really bad when I feed any of the to my chams.:(

That is one cool looking alien!!! ;) I couldn't feed things like that to my cham. I can't even think of feeding a praying mantis or anything cool. (No problem with crickets, hornworms, and all other "regular" feeders though, but I don't look at them as pets.)

They are a great species. Very prolific and easy to keep. The attention full grown adults get from kids is a great introduction to keeping bugs.

Great job getting them to eat ficus!

OK, I'll bite. How in the WORLD do you train walking sticks??? Your alien is pretty awesome, I must say!

I have to work at it. Mine get raspberry brambles. When it get cold like now, 11f, the raspberry's drop dead. So before that happens, I put a nice healthy ficus in with the sticks. As the raspberry's die off I just remove them one branch at a time. They seem not to notice they are now eating only my poor ficus trees. Get a bit pricey but I love my sticks.

Awesome creatures for sure!! But not to rain on the parade or anything but those are a big no no without the proper permits don't get me wrong I'd love to have a large group but cannot, so if you you are without the proper papers I would avoid posting pictures on public forums.... Just sayin :(

I think she is sweet ! tell Annie this one is NOT for her :p so it is hard, and sharp like it looks? or is it soft? that thing is crazy !

so what kind of papers would you need? how would one go about getting them ?
I would love to have a bug like that - is it like the same permit for snails and things -

Not sure how to get the permits or how to apply for them? I am a member on mantid forums And this topic is brought up a lot... The worst part is I used to buy these in the pet shops as a kid for five bucks a pop ah the good old days ;) if you start searching you will find the answers you seek, I just wanted to throw my 2cents out there because I hate seeing people lose the things they love...

I've actually heard from several people that there are some wild populations in Washington/Oregon so you could keep them if you found them (unless your state has specific laws about that.)

I don't think they give out permits to people for non-science purposes because some pose such a big threat if released (since a few are parthenogenic.) it's much easier to get permits for snails.

Otherwise, you can keep species native to your state. We have quite a few in the US, and one species gets to be 6 inches! Bugguide.net has a good database (and the range of all of them) and here is one I just found that has some ranges for a few (http://www.insectidentification.org/walkingsticks-and-timemas.asp)

Yes there are Indian sticks here and there got no problems finding or keeping them but the exotic sticks are a different story.

we have walking sticks and mantis in our yard - but nothing like that one- lol snails in the woods - I am really becoming obsessed with my bugs !! :p my husband wanted me to come watch a movie- NO...... I told him- I am setting up my hissers in a new tank - I have 8 kinds of bugs I keep now- this is getting out of control  - and yesterday - I got a fruit fly in my eye while making cultures - and it did not even freak me out :p - who knew my chams would lead me in such a direction ~ to keep roaches - and other bugs- but I find I like to watch them too -
