My husband wants me to...

So my husband and I were talking about when we move and what we were going to do. He asked me what type of job I was going to get. I shrugged because I dont really know, all depends on where we move and so on. What I really want to do is be a vet but I'm probably too old to think about school. So he was like "well since we live in TX we should open up a exotic pet store!" I laughed.

I'm one of those types of girls that like "what if this happens?" type. I'm supportive and most of the time positive but always think about the "What if's". I just dont know. I know its alot of responsibility, patience, money and everything. I love animals and everything just dont think I have what it takes to run a pet store (and to watch all the animals go lol).

I've around animals all my life. Use to catch all the wild lizards, snakes, etc... even tried saving a baby bird that fell out of the tree. I started watching over other peoples pets when the left for vacation when I was 13y/o. Decisions, decisions...

I don't think you're ever too old to start a new career and go back for education, however, Veterinary Medicine is a packed field now. I suspect that would make it harder. Exotic Pet store is fraught with peril (all start up retail is). I would only do that if you are financially secure enough to take the hit if it doesn't work out.

There is a growing interest in holistic types of approaches to animal care. You might check into that, though the only person I know who's in the field was a vet before he got his licenses in chiropractic and acupuncture.

Good luck! I encourage you to strive to do what you want to do rather than just what's available.

Yea I told him that we're not financially fit to run our own business non the less struggling with bills as is. I know that we are only working on one income but still... I also wanted to open up a dog kennel boarding thing too. But bills suck =P lol

He gets out of the military in November so I'll have to get some type of job to help with income. I was a stay at home mom because child care sucks also!!!!

As I learned in my College Psychology class...your brain is never done taking in information, you have an unlimited cap. I know money can be an issue and obviously maybe not having the time but if you are dedicated you can do anything. My favorite teacher in High School had three masters degrees that she earned past the age of 50 lol I think if you really feel like it is a possibility then do it. I personally am going to school at the moment to become a vet. I am 20 and obviously have a little more leeway than yourself but I really hope to open my own Vet Clinic specially for reptiles because my area lacks it so bad. But that is just my thoughts on it, I hope you can do whatever you want to do!

What about a doggy day care? They're all over the place here. You just need to make sure your place is okay for a daily influx of dogs. As you don't board them for the night there's less you have to worry about.

That stinks that $$ is an issue. Unfortunately, our economy is in the crapper at the moment. Hopefully one day you can make that dream come true. You would make an excellent exotic pet store owner. :D

=) I keep thinking "yea that would be so awesome if we won the lottery after my hubby gets out!" But wishful thinking

I also thought of that. It is a growing industry in uk as well. I have Oscar booked in for his" holidays " when we go on holiday in November. I wasn't too keen on him going into kennels but staying in someone's home appeals. And they charge a lot!!

As it is now I charge $5 a day $35 a week for 1 pet if I watch anyones pet. Anyone else in the area charges $10 + a day o_O

Well going back to school is always a good option if you can afford it. You can always got for Vet Tech. It pays pretty good and the job openings seem to be there. At $5 a day I'm sure you're the cheapest around, I'm surprised you aren't swamped.

So after thinking about it, Ive decided to get certified as a childcare provider and get my kennel license. I'm babysitting 3 kids now hoping to be able to add them to my references.

School School School!!! Hell if you get your vet degree you got 2 fields you can go into Vet or Mob doctor hehe.

Veterinary Medicine is not even close to a packed field unless you want to go zoo vet. If you have the means go back to school! Ages typically range from 20-50 in vet school so don't be worried about that either. And there is definitely a need for private exotic vets.

National Report — Pet spending is up and expected to keep rising, but the market isn’t growing fast enough to support the number of DVMs entering the veterinary profession, according to industry watchdogs.

On the surface, the job outlook for veterinarians has never been better. The human-animal bond is stronger than ever, and a federal report outlines a veterinary workforce shortage. Veterinary colleges are answering the call, increasing class sizes and offering loan repayment programs to the next generation of DVMs.

But on the practice side, visits are decreasing and competition for jobs, especially among new graduates saddled with debt, is on the rise.

Some blame veterinarians themselves for not putting enough value on their services and failing to grab their share of the ever-growing pet market. But others say increasing pet dollars don’t always translate to more veterinary spending, and that the number of veterinarians are increasing far more than the DVMs’ market share.

“The market has grown in real dollars by about 26 percent since 1991, and the number of veterinarians has grown by 78 percent,” says James F. Wilson, DVM, JD, a veterinary consultant who now serves on the VetPartners Career Development Committee, Veterinary Pet Insurance’s (VPI) Veterinary Advisory Board, and as a national advisor for the Veterinary Business Management Association (VBMA). “The market’s not growing at anywhere near the pace as the people entering it.”
