Near Disaster; they did it, I tried

I really like to run with the big boys when ever I can. But sometimes when I try, it goes way wrong.

I have kept my 2 transvaal in different cages since they arrived. Almost ever one else keep their's together. I removed the visual barrier between my chams about 3 days ago. No real reaction from either one. So today I decided it was time. I put them in the cage together. In less than 10 seconds the crap hit the fan. The male jumped off my hand, turned colors I have only seen in books, and ran head bobbing toward the female. She turned opened her tiny mouth wider than I thought possible and was hissing like a psycho. By the time I got over my shock and grabbed the male they were about 2" apart.

Let's just say lesson learned. Just because the other's have kept their chams together from day 1, does not mean I can decide to do so when mine have been alone for 2 months. The only positive I have taken from this is my 2 are definitely male and female, and the male is up for the challenge. But they are only 6 months old, so that is a good aways out.

Oh yes, i also learned yet again to think for my self because I may be correct.

Hahahaha that sounds like you put it in high gear and started grabbing. I'm glad that you were able to stop the process.

Close call, Laurie! I'm sure he would have gotten an angry nip to the face if he continued on with his passions! lol

I kept mine together for a short time but they are each in their own cage, and have been for a while. It's just easier and better for me. No worrying about anyone getting stressed, I know that when alone they aren't.

Lol, yes the males are WAY hornier and always ready to go, even more so then a panther or veiled! The only problem is that the female will get super stressed if he keeps at it with her at that size because she isnt big enough to grow a bunch of babies in her yet and give birth to them. Remember, the females get to the size of a female carpet chameleon, so these ladies have much growing left to do, while the males not so much.
I feel like there is more disadvantages to keeping them together then advantages. Just grow them up to full size and then let the raping begin lol, because its not gentle at all with these guys.
You didnt happen to snap a pic of him like that did you?

Are you kidding? I was wishing I could, but the whole thing was over in less than a minute. I just wanted him away from her.

Poor little guy! I bet he thought it was Christmas and his Birthday all at once, lol! :D You are so right to wait until she is mature though. I know I would have panicked just the same and got him out as quick as I could! I have not put my cresties together yet because I know they are one of each and I am a bit scared of what will happen and I don't want either to get hurt!

Good chaperoning Laurie!

I was the same, Miss Lily! My female crestie is big, male slightly less so, but I panicked and separated them immediately when they started biting and squeaking! Then checked JBs Cresties videos on mating and found out that it's normal! Long as the female isn't loads smaller, there's little risk. But it's another reason to check them both over regularly and give the female a few months off every now and again. Then you get these...

Well I thought it was a good idea too, just to see but I could hear your panic on the phone so I guess lil Hans will just have to wait for his sweet Sophia :)

That is going to be my problems here. From what I have heard the mating is very very rough. I will have a lot of trouble with that.

Ok that is it!! I have someone to blame.:D You must have encouraged me, I know I didn't do this to my children.

Life is good Laurie! As I hope yours is! Not too many more randy chameleons to cope with hopefully! I figured you all needed a break from my nonsense for a while. Plus we have houseguests so I'm not drinking alone...
