I have panther chameleons and I was woundering about soil to put in the pots. Is it ok to put in some dirt from the backyard or should I buy special soil? and if so what kind? For real plants how often should I change soil? Should I put a layer of sand on top of the soil or is that bad for them? sorry for all the questions Im just a little curious and I dont know anyone who has owned a chameleon.

Buy some organic soil (fertilizer and plant food free). What I do is put large river rocks, (The oval ones that are smooth) on top of the soil. Make sure they are big enough that the Cham cannot accidentally ingest them. That will keep him from the soil completely. I would stay away from backyard soil, sand and bark etc. just to be on the safe side.

I use super soil potting soil (the one that is conditioner free and all organic).

You might want to sift the soil if it has some wood barks in it.
or cover the pot with plastic canvas.

It would be better to start with some kind of store bought soil...but it would also depend on what type of plant you are getting.

One thing to remember with Chams and plants is the moisture issue. Because we are trying to keep humidity up and some times it takes a while to stimulate chams to drink, you cage will accumalate alot of moisture. so you may consider getting soil that is more permeable and allows good drainage or more rocks on the bottem and less soil.

For a top layer just like previously explained, some river rocks too big to be swallowed or dug up to prevent your cham from digging up your plant, if you have a burrowing type of cham.

What kind of plant are you thinking of and what kind of cham do you have?

Hope that helps

Thats the one I use as well. Comes in a dark brown bag.. not the lighter brown bag as it has plant food in it.
