I would put a lot of vertical sticks you need one about 8 inches under the light and a few more going down so he can thermoregulate and it gives him more routes to travel than just one I would add more foliage also.
 
I have found that ice cubes drip very well. I put the Reptisafe water cleaner in with the water for the ice cube trays. I also have a spray bottle and mist at least twice a day. My veiled girls love the ice cube drips. Each cube lasts 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how close I get them to the heat lamps.

I feel the reason he was doing this is that it was the only way he could get close to his basking spot. As someone else mentioned, a few more branches and climbing areas will help him get around better and have access to more temperature gradients.
