New Panther Chameleon Questions

Hey guys,

I have alway wanted a chameleon and recently bought a 3.5 month old panther chameleon. I have been reading alot of mixed results on sexing, and maturation etc. I was told this cham was a male however I have no idea after reading up online. Also when abouts will he start to show his colors? and does anyone know where this one would be from? I was told madagascar. Do females change colors or do they just remain earth tones. Anyone who can give me any advice on these would be greatly appreciated. He/She seems to be getting some green and red around the eyes when he guys worked up.

Looks male to me. Females can be very colorful too with pinks, purples, greens and blues. All Panther Chameleons originate from Madagascar.

Hey Man I Dont know much about Chams yet. Im still a Newb. But I Do know your Cham Looks realy Cool dude!! is it your first one?
Im still researching before i buy one and Im waiting for a reptile show to come to town in a few weeks. hopefully ill pick one up there for cheap, maybe by then I'll know a little more too!! good luck with your Cham

Where did you get him from? The breeder should be able to tell you from what part of Madagascar he's from, his "locale" and that will tell you more or less what colors you can expect him to have as an adult.

He does look male to me too. He should get the majority of his colors at the 6 month shed, and only get better after that. Females get a bit of color, but never like males. They might get pretty pinks and peach tones, but never deep reds and purples, for example.

Definatly a male, When i first got my cham i thought it was a female but boy was i wrong! haha ill attach a pic of when i first got him and what he looks like now.

This is my first Cham, I just got him about 4 days ago. I was wondering if you can overfeed him? or will he stop when hes full. He's been eating about 6 crickets, 6 meal worms and 1 waxworm a day. I got him from a local pet store and was told he will have reds, blues and greens. I hope hes a male so I can finally name him "Filbert"

Thanks for all the help

Don't give him waxworms every day! They're like eating a double-quarter pounder at McDonalds every day - it's not good for them. It's all fat. Once a month or so is plenty. And mealworms are typically not recommended because they have very little nutritional value to them, they're all shell basically. Get superworms if you can, they can come in very small sizes and they're healthier. I don't think they can be over fed though.

He might be an ambilobe, but there's no way to know until his colors come in.

I hope so, What are some of the reasons you guys think he`s a male. I have read so many mixed reviews on how to sex panthers. I`ll layoff on the waxworms, and focus on gut-loaded crickets and track down some superworms

Def a male. Colors show it and so does the hemi-penal bulge at the base of the tail in the second pic. Thats how you identify a male. Females don't have a bulge and are usually more of a drab color.

edit: Aslo consider using silkworms and butterworms as part of your cham's diet. Variety is very important.
