Just out of curiosity,

What is the best way to tell the age of Chameleon....

I have Two and have no idea how old either of them are

Thanks

I think thats hard to say about any chameleon in its juveniles/ subadult / adult stage. If you are trying to determine by size, they could be smaller due to improper feeding, overfeeding, diet, parasites, husbandry, a whole range of things. What did the breeder or store you got him from tell you?

Unfourtunately being the noob I failed to ask the simplest questions. I did every thing else but aske the age.

I was wondering if the was some way get a rough estimated. +/- 1 to 2 mos.

I would probably try and get some pictures up for more experienced Jackson members to help you.

Try to get a shot of him where there is reference for his scale. Perhaps a shot of him just perched on your hand would work.

Cut his horns off and count the rings! :D

Seriously though, As AndrewH said some clear pictures of your critter would help, but we would only be guestimating.

Cheers,
t

Oh shoot...you mean you can't tell by cutting off the horns.....
If I glue them back on will it be ok and make him....HORNY....again:D

LOL

LMAOOOOO! Sometimes it's good to not quite take chameleons and what we do with them so seriously. Thanks for laughs the both of you. :D

I really have no clue as to how old your pair would be. Judging by the length of the re-horns, I'd guess that male to be at least a year old. Sorry that doesn't narrow it down for you. He doesn't look really old though. I'd say the female would be an adult too judging by her size. She has some odd skin colouration eh? Do you know much about their history?

Anyone else care to hazard a guess on their ages? Oh, and have fun with your new critters OPI.
Cheers,
t

at how many months do each of the stages occur....juvenille, and adult.

Thanks Trace....a rough estimate was all I was looking for.

What traits or things do you look at when estimating age? size ? Length? rings around the horn?

Just curious

Hello,

To me it looks like he hatched May 12th 2007,
and she hatched July 4th, 2007.
:D;)

All we can really do is look at the size and determine what stage they are at. They definately look to be adults, and I would say she looks to be gravid. Do they stay in the same cage? Problem is once they reach adulthood and they stop growing there realy is no way to tell unless they start looking aged and mopey. There really are to many factors that effect growth to try to get anything more accurate as far as age other than, Baby, Juvie, Senior Citizen, unless you know when they hatched.

gravid......

Some male has taken advantage of my little girl....LOL

Really she looks prego....yes they do stay in the same cage, which is why i was kind of concerned about them being together....

I understand about the age thing...how could you tell she looks gravid....she has been doing the go away dance more when my male gets close or when I aproach the cage for about the last month....

OPI

I would definitely say gravid too...coloration/pattern are telling the story...and since you say she is doing the "leave me alone" dance...that should confirm it. I would strongly recommend that they be separated.

Yeah... Definately seperate them..Reason being she should be left alone while gravid so as not to stress her and the babies out... And housed alone while not gravid to ensure that she does not become Gravid when you don't want her too. Breeding is very stressfull on a female, and being housed with a male can lead to unecessary stress... as well as overbreeding, which will shorten her life drastically. That and there are very few Cham species that can be housed in groups.

Also, In case you didn't know... No Eggs, Jacksonii are Live Bearers... You will come to the cage one day to find a bunch of little Jax clinging to the cage. Pretty cool.

:(

Well that's what you get for shacking up with some strange guy...I am glad that I kept asking the questions....

Looks like I have a lot of work ahead of me...I have a cage waiting to be screened and put together...guess it will have to happen sooner than later...

Much Mahalos (thanks) every one
