Ok to leave outside for the night?

Hello, I've had my chameleons outside all day today. I was wondering if it is okay to leave my two panther chameleons(both are boys and are around 5.5-6months old) The night time low over here is 56*f. I remember reading that someone left there chams out one time in the low 50's and that the cool down was good for their health. Also I have never seen a cat or any other predator that may harm my chams near or in my backyard. Thanks in advance.

People mostly recommend anything lower than 50 degrees take them inside.

50 would be pushing it and but that being said I think your chams would be ok, IF...

the temperature has gradually gotten to that low of 56.

IF the 56 is just a spike down in temps your chams might not be adjusted to it and I would take them in.

The sun is just has set over the mountains and it is still 73 degrees outside. I'll keep an eye on the thermometer I have outside.

I just got back from a spring break trip to Vegas. It was great weather out at night. It was a bit cold.

A ten degree temperature drop is good at night, but anything below 55F is pushing it. It would probably be O.K. for one night....

I have to say I'd get up every hour or two to peek out and make sure the cage was still okay....things come out at night that almost make "cat" seem benign. (nothing really makes "cat" seem benign)

I personally wouldnt leave a panther outside if the temps. dropped under 65 deg. F a veiled is a little different. Anything under 65 for a panther and I would get paranoid.

I keep all my lizards outside as long as temps remain above 50 at night. I have done this for many years without problem. This includes not only all sorts of chameleons (including panthers) that I have had, but true tropicals like green basilisks, asian water dragons, green iguanas, etc. It is no problem.

Your panther will be fine. What you need to be careful of are low night temps in the low 50s followed by low day temps in the 50s and 60s - especially if there is rain involved and especially if it stretches on for a week or two...

The other thing you may may want to check is the accuracy of the thermometer.
I'm using the zoomed digital thermometer. The one that comes with the screameleons cage package.

Thanks, it got to about 55 degrees at about 1am and stayed that and now it is 82 degrees outside.

Watch your humidity levels too. I know its less humid in Vegas than here in Cali. Low temps n no humidity is bad.

If you want to keep him outside, you may want to consider putting a heat lamp out. I have an outdoor cage and during winter I put my red heat lamp underneath where he is sleeping.
