On the hunt for a mulberry tree tonight!

Well I have 200 silks without food :( The chow has went bad so tonight I will be out looking for mulberry trees at local schools. Anyone have a picture of what to look for? I've looked on google but many different looking trees with different looking leaves.

Goodness. I have a large bag of the stuff I will probably never use. If you can get someone local from the forum to spot you some food for a couple of days, I will mail you out most of what I have. I will keep just a little in case I get a few silkworms again. (I like them for their ability to excite interest in at-risk rescued chameleons.)

How did yours go bad? Did you mix up a bunch of the stuff at one time and have it spoil?

You've got 2 threads running. It looks like, from your other thread, that Dodolah can give you an emergency ration. I can send you most of what I have, for free.
This is a really big heavy bag, so I may have you help with shipping cost.

:) I have some to hold me for a day or two. I saw you at the Tiki booth in pomona :) I was talking with Dave Weldon at your booth :) "Nice Vest" :D I will be at the Anaheim show also maybe this time I can introduce myself if your not too busy with all the customers

Thank you for the compliments on the vest. We don't go to many shows, I'm afraid, so you won't be seeing us in Anaheim. I wish I had taken more time to talk to Dave Weldon at the show.

Sorry I changed my mind about the $5 for shipping. But my husband will probably wonder why I give away all this chow AND pay to ship it. The chow weighs 6 pounds and you can have it, so if you can cover the shipping in a flat rate USPS box that would be great. I did get your PM.

ADDED: OK, got your payment for shipping. Thank you very much. This will go out this afternoon or first thing tomorrow morning.

Thanks so much gesang! Dave knows everything and has helped me out a lot! I'm super lucky that he lives less then a mile from me :D

This post makes me think of a funny story..

I while ago we had about 100 silkworms and ran out of silkworm food.. We tried to overnight it but the order didn't go thro fast enough so we still wouldn't be getting it for 2 or 3 days still..

I was so worried my silkworms where going to starve! So I started to research mulberry trees. I was thinking maybe I could buy one or something.. I got a bunch of different pictures of leaves and different types of mulberry (red, paper..white...etc)

Just when I was about to give up I found a picture of mulberries, the actual berrys. They look a lot like raspberries. I stared at the picture and realized that I had seen those berrys before! And I had seen them on a tree right in my fount yard! Sure enough the silkworms gobbled up the leaves.

After all my frantic looking and trying to order food I had a mulberry tree in my fount yard the WHOLE time and I didn't even know it!:p

That is a funny story! I've done my share of hunting down Mulberry trees ;) which can be frustrating since it is classified as an invasive tree here in FL....
Everyone on the forum is so nice an helpful, glad to see this lad helped out.

Back on track of the actual hunting of trees.

My other half and I were going to try to search some down at some elementary schools tomorrow.

So is the one I am looking for Morus Alba?

And any so cal people seeing them sprout up enough yet?

Yes, from what I understand they favor the White Mulberry or Morus Alba, though they will eat the others. On a precautionary note, the leaves should be obtained from a pesticide free area.

Schools and parks are prime hunting grounds for mulberry leaves. On the way to my shop theres a nursery and they had an huge mulberry tree for sale, just beside the gate, so I decided to stop by and check it out. They wanted $750 for it:eek: It wasnt in the greatest shape either, it needed to be trimmed badly. I went back on the way home and trimmed it for free and well.....errr....... lets just say I hauled away the trimmings for free too!:D I ended up with a 33 gallon bag of leaves, and did them a favor.:p

I have a extra bag of chow thats uncooked and sealed I bet shipping would be the same either way. Mulberry farms gets $8-9.
