Hello, i recently bought a 9-12 month old female xanth from fl chams that arived on tuesday. She was fine for the first few days until i noticed she had her left eye closed but not the right eye. I checked up on her about an hour after i noticed she had her eye closed and she did nothave it closed at that time. Today she had her left eye closed and her right eye open again. Im assuming this isnt normal is it? Maybe she has something in her eye? Theres no dirt or anything in her cage just plastic plants maybe she poked her eye with a leaf? I use 40 watt house bulbs for her and my other chams, none of my other chams have had one eye closed and one eye opened that i have seen so i dont think its the buld unless the bulb is too close? Its about 4 in from the hiest branch in her cage and thats were the basking light is. I dont know if i should ask for an exchange or try to find out what i can do to fix her if this isnt normal.

Try misting her for a really long time or even putting her in the shower. You could also get sterile saline solution (the kind used for contacts, make sure it doesn't have a lot of additives) and drip that right onto her eye. It's possible that she has something stuck in her eye.

What is her basking temperature?

i will put her in the shower and see what happens and ill get the sterile saline solution for her tomorrow thanks. her temp is at 84f right now. how far should the light be from the branches were the basking light hits?

Temps are more important than distance. Is 84 the temperature at the basking point?

If so, that's probably okay. I would call it a tad high. I would say 82 at the basking point falling to room temperature at the bottom of the cage. But, as long as there's a cool down at the bottom of the cage, a basking temp of 84 isn't bad for her.

When you do the shower, point the shower to the wall and have it bounce onto her. If you aren't moving her cage then put a plant in the shower for her to cling to. Practice getting the shower flow to bounce off the wall onto the cage before you put her on the plant.

yea she cant go any closer to the bulb. i can lower the branch a bit. so if the shower thing works when will i know if that took care of the problom? right after i turn off the shower? could be over night or maybe even a day?

I just noticed that there's been a handle change...are you, alex, the original poster?

I think you want to evaluate the next day, not right after the shower experience.
