Can I use the tearimyicin (spelling? Sorry.) in her eyes? It looks like she might have some sort of eye infection. Should I just take her to the vet? Thanks for any reply.

Spikes eyes

Thanks for your interest. She is a veiled and about 8 mos. old. I handle her about once every 3 days or so. She is in the corner of a room, the bottom of the cage is about 3 ft. off the ground. The temp is around 87 during the day and 75 or so at night. Spike has a 3x2x2 rubberized screen covered cage that my Dad and I built. She has the coconut bark at the bottom with 3 live plants that I got an okay from the plant index for chameleons off of a website. She has natural maple sticks that go through out the cage. She gets feed once a day 4-5 cricket that have been gut loaded and have the vits and cal. power on them. She gets a full spray down 2 times a day. She has a uvb, red, and regular bulb on her.

I did remember that she hit her face on the side of the cage last week. I did not think of it until a few min. ago. She is a grumpy girl. One of the eyes is closed and the other one won't close. I live in a cold climate so I do have to have both her bulbs on all day and just the red one on at night to maintain the temp. Of course the uvb is on all day everyday.

Thank you again.
Sam

How do you know she won't close it?

You shouldn't use any substrate, bare floor is best since they can get impacted if they eat it. Also, as she is 8 months you only need to feed 6-8 crickets (or equivalent of) three days a week. The temp should be lowered to 80 to prevent her from laying eggs. Make sure your UVB isn't a coil, and what exactly are you dusting with, and how often?

She doesn't need that red light at night unless your temps drop below 50, though it is prefered to keep it in the low 60's.

I was feeding her and I noticed that she did not blink like normal with the one eye. I will slow down on the feedings then. The temp in the house gets to about 55 before the heater comes on in dead of winter. As of right now the temp in the house is like 60, I am talking about our house and not hers of course. I dust her food about every 2 days with the calcium phosphorus by Fluker's and the Fluker's reptile vitamin about once every 10 days or so. I will take a picture and post it. Thank you.

It was hard to get a picture. This is the only one I could get out of 15 that you can see a little crusty stuff around the eye.

Not to jump the gun but I would just take her to the vet, could be some kind of infection.
Better safe then sorry :)

I know this is an old forum but I thought I'd post an answer on here for anyone else in the future that has this same issue and is looking for answers like I was a few days ago. My chameleon did not shut his eye for over a week and I was really scared because there was no was answers online anywhere that said what it could possibly be so I figured it was an eye infection and took him to the vet. Turns out there was a stubborn shed crusted over his eye that would not come off and that's why his eye could not shut anymore. So if anyone else has this issue I would recommend heavy mistings in the tub with warm water or in a bucket with warm shallow water for 30 mins to 1 hour once or twice a day until the shed comes off. Also they may need higher humidity in the cage.
