Outside

Hello all!

I have a very large screened in porch and id like to put an outside enclosure out there for my cham. What are some things (other than plants) that ill need to have out there for him? Is it safe? And how long can I let him hang out out there with me? I live in Columbus Georgia and it is warm here 85% of the year.

thanks!

Depending on what exposure the porch gets you can house chans outside fairly easily. I would put an automated mister out there to make life easier, the bonus of being outside is drainage isn't usually an issue. Other than plants you can run bare branches to give the cham an un-shaded basking spot. If you plant heavily your cham will be able to regulate temp well. When it gets nasty summer hot, you will need to keep an eye out for heat stress. At that point you can either bump up your misting to see if that cools it down or you can run a swamp cooler.

The other thing you will need to worry about is wild animals. Raccoons are very powerful and if they want in only hard wire will keep them out. I use vinyl coated hardware cloth on my outdoor enclosures. Regular hardware cloth can be very rough on cham feet and cause you problems down the road. It's worth the extra money to only build it once.

Also some of this will depend on what kind of cham you have in terms of what temps they will tolerate.

Good luck and post up pics

Thank you for the info!!! It is a male panther, I'm also in an apartment on the second story. What is a swamp cooler? What are signs of heat stress?
Thanks!
