I purchased a two panthers male and female 3 weeks ago, both are in identical sets ups temp and viv wise, female ate and is eating well from 2nd day (not seen her drink) she is pooing fine no smell etc good constancy. good prominent eyes. active etc

However the male would not eat from day one, he drank for me as soon as I sprayed viv, and did on most occasions not sure how much as he just seemed to move his head against the wet viv wall. He spent a fair bit of time under lamp, but then he started to sit low down or on the deck, I double checked my temps with infra red they were acceptable, as he seemed to be drinking, I presumed he was just settling in with regard to food.

He started spending less time high up and more on the deck, Then in the last 2 days he took a quick decline, slept all day, started looking dehydrated (sunken eyes) his grip was good, woke up when disturbed but moved slow.

I encouraged him to eat waxies by placing them in his mouth, he eventually swallowed but the came out undigested even tho I placed him under heat, was very smelly. as they came out within 24 hours I don't think impaction is to blame.

He changed light colours at night and slept straight and tail hanging with slight coil at tip (he used to go full spectrum of red etc when asleep hunched /tail coiled etc and would go dark when I held him to feed, but did not really become aggressive with throat puffs or mouth open. I then started to pipette drops of water onto his snout and and tongue to encourage him to drink, which he did to some degree.

Unfortunately he passed late last night. I think he was Ill from purchase what come back do I have against the shop I bought him from, its going to be hard to prove he was ill at purchase, bit I am sure his setup was adequate as the female is doing well.

I have a corn snake I've had from hatching now 9 years old, and leo's with no issues so am am confident my husbandry is ok.

I'm going to have a faecal float from the female done at my vets (if they do it) as a precaution as they used to be housed together

He went downhill very fast from fri night saturday morning , and my local vets is half day saturday and closed sunday, I don't have a specialised vet close by either incase anyone asks why I never went to vets.

So sorry to hear that :(. I'm no expert, but it sounds like you started out with a sick cham and despite your enclosure being much better than the conditions he was kept in before, it might've been too late... He might've been stressed by being in there with two females, especially if they were aggressive towards him.

It definitely sounds like he was sick when you bought him. The only recourse y you would have against the shop depends on their returns/guarantee for live animals. Most local shops around my area guarantee animals for 7 days, meaning if your animal dies within 7 days of purchase, you can bring it back as proof and they will replace the animal. You will have to contact the shop to determine their policy.

I'm sorry to hear about your male dying, but it may be the saving grace for your female. Take her to the vet for parasite testing ASAP, even if she sends healthy now. The fact that your male was passing undigested insects sounds like an intestinal issue... Which with chameleons usually means parasites. If she was housed with him in the pet store, she could be infected as well.

It's also possible your male had some organic disease, not parasites, that caused his system to shut down. If you still have his body, you could bring it to the vet for a necropsy to determine the cause of death. Sorry to hear about your troubles, and I hope the rest of your pets are okay.

the tank I would say was not bigger than 2x1.5x1.5 way to small to house 3 chameleons too small for one I would say, not that you should house more than one anyway

By the time I hand fed him he was already weak, felt cold even though he was under the lamp some of the time, I think he was too far gone and weak to digest the food properly to be honest

I phoned my vet, who has no speciality in reptiles for a price on a faecal float for parasites and he quoted £60 to send it off.

I have one more vet practice to phone to get a quote from.

Is £60 a good price or is that on the expensive side?

I still have the body, but if they charge £60 for a float I dread to think what a necropsy/post mortem would cost.

Going to go to shop tomorrow to see what they say, and tell them that its going to cost me to get a float done on the female. something was not right with him, just hope she does not have something wrong.

Hey, firstly i'm sorry to hear about your loss.

In terms of the fecal float (I presume you are in the UK as you are using the £ ) I got mine done for I think £30 - £35.

They did mention to me at the time that you could send it in so maybe give them a call and discuss

Live in anglesey North Wales. I'm surprised in the lack of reptile vets. Never needed one before. None of my reps needed one until now

Thanks will email them. That price is what I thought it might be. Will ask them if it can be sent. I thought it had to be as soon as. But could be wrong

I am sorry that you lost your chameleon. Here in FL most vets are around $20 to $25 US dollars for a fecal. Check this thread for where the UK members recommended their vet. Post 41 has allot of UK vets listed.

Thanks nearest ones to me are the Cheshire ones, but they are still 85 - 100 miles away 1.5 - 2 hours car journey.

If samples can be sent might find one that I can send it to that might be cheaper.
