Panther Problem/s

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - Ambilobe Panther Chameleon, Male, He will be 2 on December 22nd, since he was 3 months old

Handling - I probably handle him about twice a week, just to check on him and get him out of his cage/cages

Feeding - I’ve always had problems with Ranger’s eating habits, since we first got him. Our usual three are crickets, wax worms, and super worms, and he eats about every other day or about 2-3 times a week. It’s never continuous eating patterns. Gut loaded carrots and apples for when I feed him crickets/superworms

Supplements - I do give him a little ‘calcium’ shot. where I basically mix some calcium with some water and and calcium together and put it into a little syringe without the needle, and when I get him to drink I give him water and then his little shot. We have regular calcium powder, and Heprtivite, and another brand of calcium that I give him at least once a month, regular calcium powder is really like 2-3 times a month and it's most commonly in the form of my calcium shot

Watering - I have a mister, that I use I mist around his cage for about 3 minutes about 5 times a day.

Fecal Description - He has been tested for parasites before, and we got negative for them. His last fecal was about half a week ago, and it was regular with a little bit of orange in his urates.

History - Ranger has already had feeding issues, and currently we have a eye medication/ointment because the vet suggested that since he had a problem keeping his eyes open that it might be an eye infection.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - We have two cages for him:

First cage: is a 2x2x4 feet screen cage about 2 feet off the ground in it’s own custom built stand

Second cage: is a 2x1x4 cage that is about 3 feet off the ground*

*Reasons we have a second cage is because it’s a ‘travel cage’ for when we have to take him to the vet, or we would put him in there to monitor his eating habits and try to check on his feeding and keep him warm etc.

Lighting - We have a reptisun 5.0 UVB and a 75 watt and a 100 watt bulb on either side of his cage. Lights go on at 7:00am and go off at 8:00.

Temperature - 70-89 with basking being about 90-92. Lowest over night temp is around 75, we measure them with a digital thermometer.

Humidity - 60-80% humidity. I spray him 5 times a day. Humidity Gage

Plants - We have two large Pothos plants for him to hide in.

Placement - In the winter Ranger is in the laundry room since it is the quiets place with little human traffic, and it has the highest humidity in the home. Summer where is pretty warm mostly in June - August he is outside in a partially shaded area. I put a pictures of his main/outside cage and that is not where we put him in the summertime.

Location - USA, Georgia

Current Problem - I plan on taking him in to the vet next week, because I believe that he has an upper respiratory infection, I do hear popping when he breathes when I hold him so I will have the doctor check him on that.

I'm worried about his eye, how it looks swollen and closed most of the day and it's even closed when I try to handle him. As well as some strange little skin patches on the underside of his stomach they just look like little mounds of skin hanging off of him, and I haven't really noticed them before or really noticed them so large before. I'm also worried about mucus when he drinks a lot and it's just drips off his mouth when he gets going with drinking. It's clear and it's pretty heavy type stuff.

I'm really just wondering if what I'm doing to take care of him is ok, and if I should be worried about him or if something more serious is happening here. As well as if I need to change anything when it comes to taking care of him.

I ma glad you have a vet appointment for your little one. It would be preferable to get him in sooner, but if that is the earliest available take it.

It sounds like you are right to think it is an RI. I have a girl that has had 2 RI's. If there is that much mucus already, you need to get some antibiotics in him. In the meantime, make sure he has plenty of water and raise your basking temps a few degrees. You can also use a warm mist humidifier to help him breath better. Just be sure the mist humidifier is far enough from him that he cannot get burned by the mist. My girl loved sitting in the steam, it really seemed to make her feel better.

Ultimately, the antibiotics are the only true solution. The rest are simply going to help him be more comfortable until you can get him to the vet.

The problem with his eye could be any number of things, including a sinus infection, or just some shed stuck in his eye, it is hard to say from here.

Good luck with your little man.

A question: Does this heavy salivation happen primarily while actively drinking? That's a sign he's dehydrated. I've had dehydrated chams drool an impressive amount of clear saliva as they drink. If there is a lot of mucous in his mouth when he's not drinking that's a sign of a URI.

You're only giving him calcium two or three times a month?? It should be dusted on the insects before you feed them to the chameleon at most feedings....and it should be phosphorous free and D3 free. It's recommended that you dust twice a month with a phosphorous - free calcium D3 powder and twice a month with a vitamin powder that contains a beta carotene ( prOformed ) source of vitamin A.
