"panther"?

funny thing is the leopard tortoise is called Geochelone pardalis but its a leopard tortoise not panther?!

I always thought the stripes were more reminiscent of a tiger than a panther, which has no stripes. Of course, not all Panther Chameleons look the same... not by a longshot!

From Kent67s Wikipedia reference:

"The Institut de France was founded in the same year, and he was elected a member of its Academy of Sciences. In 1796 he began to lecture at the École Centrale du Pantheon, and at the opening of the National Institute in April, he read his first palaeontological paper, which was subsequently published in 1800 under the title Mémoires sur les espèces d'éléphants vivants et fossiles."

There is a reference to L'Ecole Centrale du Pantheon. Could "Pantheon" be the reference to the common name of Panther, in honour of Cuvier's academic institute?

or

The Free Dictionary refers to Pantheon as " All the gods of a people considered as a group"
It is well known that the local populations fear the Panther Chameleon as being supernatural.
