Petsmart?!

I made the mistake of going into petsmart on aero dr in San Diego today and saw this poor creature. I thought they had new laws regulating the treatment of animals in San Diego. I don't want to upset anyone, I was just hoping if they got a few emails. Maybe they would set this guy up with a cage more than 3x his body. He looked terrified. It took all my willpower not to take him with me. But what does that help when they get another? I know it's hard to gauge from the photo. But it's the size (or smaller) of a shoebox

They had one in the same size in Los Angeles too it's ridiculous! I wanted to say something but thankfully someone came and bought him and I haven't seen another in there yet. It's kind of mind boggling how places like that and pet co make a big deal about how much care they put into their pets but are clueless to reptiles. But as long as they keep selling healthy or not they are going to keep getting them. It's really sad.

The petco near me actually had a pretty good enclosure? They had two chams in there and im assuming they were family because they weren't being hissy at eachother. One had a cropped tail for some reason but otherwise they were really healthy.

Well that's good at least. The petco by my house always have them in this glass with not enough coverage and the dripper is never ever on. And they always have dirt substrate. It's terrible. Or they'll have one with lots of coverage but not enough space for it to move around.

They also have the cutest baby leopard geckos and they're so lazy i love them https://puu.sh/s801c/9a5520c279.png this one was sleeping in the weirdest position. But back to the point, my petco never really had problems with chams in bad enclosures, or if they do i don't notice them.

I'm hoping this was a fluke. I'm sure each store is different. I just felt so bad for the little guy. It's good to hear some of the other stores put in the effort to properly care for the animals they sell. We have a few reptile stores in San Diego that do a fantastic job!

At mine they have a small cage as well, but they only keep them there when a customer is about to pick them up. They keep them at the breeder's place until you order one.

Being family has nothing to do with not being pissy. If the space is too small, the chams are old enough, and one is more dominant, they are going to stress each other out. Who knows whether the cropped tail cham lost it to a sibling some time earlier? They may be so overwhelmed by being on display they are not showing normal territorial behavior in that situation.

My daughters and I saw the cutest juvenile veiled cham in a small glass habitat in Petsmart. It took all my will power not to buy it [along with a couple of kittens], but the members here warn that the reptiles are treated like stock products, instead of delicate pets, and would be replaced soon after it was sold. It makes me sad knowing that companies do that.

They were very young. And i went back to the petco to ask them about the cham with the cropped tail and apparently he was returned because the owner didn't know shit about chameleons and something happened apparently? I hope they're in a good home now.
