Plant foods!

I have several plants that are used and rotated for my enclosures. I have the following:

(5) 18" Hibiscus plants in 10" pots
(2) 60" Ficus trees in 18" pots
(2) 24" Schefflera arboricola plants in 12" pots
(6) 10" Schefflera arboricola plants in 6" pots
(3) Pothos in 10" pots
(2) Gardenia plants in 12" pots
(2) 12" Dracaena plants in 8" pots
(1) 12" Boston Fern in a 8" pot,
(1) 12" Cast Iron plant in a 12" pot

And a few more...my brain is overloaded...

I rotate them on a regular basis to ensure the chams have fresh plants all the time. I have them all in organic soil, and the soil seams to be depleated of nutrients now.

I am looking for some "organic" plant food to give them a boost. What is everyone using to keep thier plants thriving? Egg shells? Worm poop?

Since I got into this hobby I have some how somehow become heavly involved in 3 other side hobbies.....Gardening, Insects, and photography... When will it end!?!?:confused::D

Thanks,
Jay:)

Do they get annoyed when you change the cage, or do most adjust well?
Mine hates when I change anything. But, then again he hates everything, hahaha. Yeah, he does.

I usually replace them with a like plant, ie: Hibiscus for Hibiscus...etc. That is the main reasoning for so many of each. If I were to remove the plant for the day they would be completly fine, as there is tons of bio-vines and samba vines throughout the enclosure.:) In the event that I do change them out for a different type, I see no stress or abnormal behavior whatsoever.:)

Lucky. You sound like you got some laid back dudes for the most part.
Chameleo seems to notice the smallest change, and gets grouchy about it. Story of his life though.

This is him

What a little firecracker.

I used a schultz 10-15-10 liquid on my just about dead pothos and it was like a miracle lol it is coming back very nice. I believe i got it from walmrt or my local hardeware store cant remember witch sory.

miracle grow - put it in, results just like the commercials! The stuff is really great. If you find that no organic fertilizers will work, miracle grow is a good, safe alternative.

Hello Jay!

My bonsai expert friend says the worm compost tends to make plants leggy. I used to use it and probably not long enough to really see that effect. But once he told me, I just went back to repotting on a regular basis. I use an organic soil by Whitney Farms and mix it with sand about 75/25.

I have a pretty green thumb with plants, but it's not the greenest out there. I love plants and I love to learn new ways of making them look their best. Check out websites like www.DavesGarden.com. But in all honesty, I use very little else in the soil except for a ton of water.

It's different for everyone. Environment, lighting and temps change everything.

Thank you all for the responces. It looks like the options are to change the soil on a regular basis, or to use either worm poop/miracle grow. I don't have a problem using any of these methods, I just want a method that is safe for the chameleons. I would love to be able to use a comercial fertilizer and call it a day. I have seen several plant foods that state they are "Organic", yet are these still safe? We all talk and swear by repoting our plants in organic soil and washing them religiously before we place them in our cages. What is the main purpose? The pestacides? The fertalizers? Why do we need to use organic soil? I went with the flow and folowed these guide lines yet don't really understand the exact reasons....

Why not bring up an old thread versus starting a new one... I figure the thread name is still in order for the problem solving.

It shows this n00bie uses the thread search button :)

I'm telling you right now, the side hobbies only continue to grow, lmao. I have the same deal. Now im into insects as pets, entemology collections of my own, exotic plants and insane amounts of reptiles. You have what all cham owners eventually contract.... herp-lovers-itis...Enjoy it!

This thread is almost 9 months old. :p

Is there anything wrong with reviving an old thread if there is new relevant information on the topic, or is it better to start a new thread?

I have a new organic fertilizer from Daniel's Plant Foods that doesn't smell, has low levels of salt, and seems to give great results. The hitch is you can only buy it in 5 gal. pails. I'll keep the board posted if they make smaller portions.

Earth Juice makes a couple of good organic fertilizers, like their "Grow" fertilizer. It's not super smelly, and it's salt level is acceptable.

I would recommend avoiding any foods that are seaweed-based, or those containing fish; they will leave behind too much salt in a potted plant.

And then, there's the smell...

It depends on the situation, and I wasn't rude about it. :p

And it wasn't new relevant information, it was new relevant questions. :D
