Poo in the feeding cup...

So this predicament has been plaguing me recently and I just wanted to know if it happens to anyone else. If I leave the feeding cup in the cage for any of my chams that cup feed after they finish their meal for the day they decide to go bask, drink a little, and then drop me a bomb in the food dish. The reasoning I see behind it is because they are very clean in general, usually pooping in the farthest hard to reach never visited corners of the cages anyways. So I'm assuming they are smart enough to know that if they poo in the dish that it will not accidentally hit their sleeping branch or any of their little cham highways and they won't have to worry about stepping over it later. Plus I think they know if they poo in the dish I will remove it immediately. I do this with other piles also but I think they like it better this way because its less stressful for them seeing as I have to spray down their vines if they have an accidental hit. The good news if they are cage broken now, I'm just getting sick of scrubbing out food dishes and throwing them out after they have been poo'd in and scrubbed too many times. Ugh.

Ha Ha......

They are actually pretty smart about potty issues. Most of mine poo in the same spot every time. Most of mine are kind enough to poo so it lands on the cage floor instead of a plant. That kind of behavior is the chameleon equivelent of an outhouse. I don't cup feed any chameleons except my Melleri. They are in a free range. They are really into the outhouse routine. They walk to the farthest edge of their free range, turn around so their rear is pointing outward, do their "business", turn around and go back to their usual basking spot. Luckily their outhouse choice makes their poo land on the waterproof tray that covers the floor of their free range. Pretty easy to clean up. They will on occassion, poop in one of their feeder cups. They have only done this when it is totally empty. Never when it has a single cricket or roach in it. I do think this is meant as a "message" for me :p

Can you teach Kami my senegal to do this? She poops all over her cage and branches. Would be easier to clean if she went in a cup ahaha :D

Consider yourself lucky, My panther thinks that arms are for pooing.

A paper towel cut to size may make the dish clean up easier.

Consider relocating the feeding cup.
And if you think they are aiming for a place on purpose, give them an alternate dish to use, one that you find easier to clean and into which you dont put food.

A couple of mine choose to relieve themselves such that it falls into the pan that also collects drip water. Makes clean up nice and easy. I too wonder if maybe they recognize that anything dropped there gets cleaned up quickly.

excellent point. i believe (more often than not) they have a basic routine they like to adhere to, and that it is possible to use that routine to determine a better spot, many times when they recognize that the food is in a new location, then they will change their routine accordingly. im not suggesting it is a good idea to constantly change locations to stay ahead of them , but some locations are definitely better feeding cup locations than others (at least for a while), and i tend to not leave my feeding cup locations real long term either. i think maybe changing locations once in a while is probably a good thing, in terms of breaking up the boredom, helping maintain hunting instinct etc. this is the way my chams have been kept, but it may not be the same for a cham that is used to longterm fixed routine. right now i have my biggest ones feeding cup at the end of the branch, 99%of the time she lays nose up at the end of the branch , in order for her to crap in her cup, she would almost have to do it intentionally (seeing as how she would have to turn 180*and all) jmo

:D lol Good thread. I thought it was only Gizzy who did that. She usually empties the cup of food and then lets me know it`s time to remove it

I feel pretty fortunate that both of my Cham's 98% of the time tend to use the potty in the same spot in their cages. So when I look in their cage every morning, i can expect to see a little surprise in the same spot making cleaning easy because I don't have to hunt for their presents :p
