Problem with spiders

Dez

Chamalot Chameleons
I have been able to breed some crickets. I have them in some drawer/tubs in the closet in our 'chameleon room'

I have a BIG problem with spiders finding there way into my cricket drawers and just in the room in general. I smush spiders on site

This evening I found the BIGGEST BLACK WIDOW SPIDER I have EVER seen in the closet behind the cricket bins. (SCARY!)

I am frustrated because I obviously can't spray poison because it will contaminate and or kill my crickets and be bad for my chams.

Has anyone found any natrual spider repellent that is cricket and cham safe???

I was gonna say, I welcome these guys in my house

but here in Florida they are everywhere... At least in my house :) However I still have spiders. I think the way to deal with it is just accept it as part of the hobby LOL!

See Ya,

Todd

My lord, i would not survive with spiders! they scare the ____ out of me.. :p

Where there are bugs, there will be more bigger fiercer bugs. It is part of the hobby. If you really want to do something about it, go to the feed store and buy a bit of FOOD GRADE diatomaceous earth. Sprinkle that around where you see spiders and such- sprinkle it on their webs and them as well. It should help.

Diatomaceous earth is a powder made up of the tiny dried exoskeletons of diatoms, tiny crystalline water animals. They basically act as tiny razors and will give the insets the death of a thousand cuts. The bugs will dehydrate and die soon after they walk through it. Interesting fact, diatomaceous earth is used to filter pools and is also commonly used in household cleaners such as furniture polish. It acts as tiny little sanding agents.

Emphasis on FOOD GRADE-do not use pool grade. I have never heard anything about it's use on spiders???

You have to get them to walk through it, but if you are keeping other bugs away, the spiders will go away, too.

Food grade is very important and it is still cheap. It is safe for anything that doesn't have an exoskeleton and is commonly used to treat parasites in horses and dogs and even people. I have dusted crickets with it mixed with calcium right before feeding them off to the chams. You can also dust your house or garden plants with it to keep bugs from attacking them.

The advantage of Canada. Everyhing with 6 or more legs dies in the winter and you get 5 months to kill everything that made it inside.

This is why I have cats! Spiders do not survive long in a house with 3 cats who think they are a tasty snack. Then again, we don't have dangerous spiders over here! When you say black widow, do you mean the tiny poisonous spider that everyone fears?

My cham room is infested with those translucent house geckos, they eat spare crickets and any other bugs that find their way in, my chams dont seem to mind them...too big to be food

EDIT: also with anoles, the anoles get the day shift and the geckos the night shift :p

Richard, they are wild ones that get in, if you were even talking to me, and Lee, chams shouldnt eat wild caught foods, and some spiders are toxic to chams

perhaps but spiders are on the chams menu on the wild, pygmies youngsters love to eat new hatchlings spiders, there is some clips on the discovery or national geographic there you can see differences chamaeleons species eating spiders.
Jurlis: but you can take the cham to the spider instead ;)
