Protect Wooden Dowel from Water

I plan on putting some wooden dowels in my chameleon enclosure to use as horizontal perches. What can I use to keep it from rotting from the moisture due to misting? Any non-toxic sealants?

A "child-safe" water based polyurethane sealer will work (use at least 2 coats and dry them thoroughly). I prefer using natural barked tree branches instead of dowels. Dowels are made from kiln-dried softwoods that will tend to soak up water more.

I found the dowels do mold so I changed to bamboo I purchased at Lowes,it works well, found several different sizes and also found some plastic textured plant stakes that work well also.
