pygmy or veiled

newtochams

Hi I'm new to this forum and have not owned chameleons before I really like veiled chams because of their color and temperment but their price and setup price aren't to great. I have recently found out my pet store has a few pygmys are they good chams if so why and is $36.99 a good price for them also do they need uvb and are they hardy or handleable. Thanks:D

Hello and welcome to the forums :)

If you are worried about cost then it may be a good idea to hold off until you have enough funds (an endless supply of money that falls out your rear end daily :D) set ups are pricey and you have to replace bulbs regularly. Also as your cham grows you will need bigger enclosures and extras. Then there's vet bills which can be hundreds of pounds depending on the problem and these guys can have so many problems!

I would not recommend a Pygmy for a first time cham. They are so delicate and ofteb have health issues difficult to treat because of their size. Pygs are definately for the more experienced keeper. Also I think most of them are wild caught which stirs up problems on its own!

Veiled chameleons are hardy and do very well in captivity. Here's a great resource recently added to the forums which will tell you lots of things you will need to know to raise a healthy veiled or panther https://www.chameleonforums.com/care/chameleons/

Unfortunately I'm not sure where to find a Pygmy care sheet!

Edit PS don't expect a friendly chameleon of any species! Yes indeed some are like puppies but there are a lot of cranky unsociable individuals out there too! (Unsociable as they should be :))

thanks can a veild go in a exo terra glass terrarium i think they can from all the research i have done what size do you recommend is 24hx18wx18l ok for a veiled cause i dont have to much room at my place and i already have a crestie and a leo can they live on bark and how many crickets a day/every other day:confused:? Thanks again.

Thanks that was really helpful. Are there any chams that could live in a 12x12x24 or smaller maby a gracefull, flap neck, mellers, oustalets or jacksons cause i have honestly loved jacksons since before i can remember. I know panthers are out at least i think they are:confused:. thanks again ps hopefully something that doesn't eat to much.

Melleri are one of the biggest species so definitely not! Oustslets are also very large so no to that one too. If you have room for the cage to be 18x18" can you go a little taller? You could keep a Jackson in an 18x18x36" cage. That's what my male is in - anything less I think is too small. 12x12x24 would be okay for smaller species like carpets but not much bigger. Maybe a graceful or flapneck but if this is your first cham I'd recommend something captive bred as they're more resilient and graceful and flapnecks are almost always wild caught so will be more challenging.

thanks i could go higher but wider is a big no the jacksons might be what i go for but got to talk to my parents they make the decisions and all. Can jacksons be come tame like panthers and are they agressive thanks. Also how many crickets do i feed per day/every other day and can it live in a glass exo terra tank. If you know a good care sheet plz send me the link:)

I was thinking maybe a senegal chameleon. I don't know much about their husbandry, I just know they are small. You could maybe do some research on them if your interested. They are also cheap. I see them go for as low as $15 each at reptile shows.

Thanks every one but I just measured it out and I have enough room for a vieled. Got to save a bit of money first as it will cost 2-3 hundred to set up can a exo Terra tall tank work its not mesh but has quite a bit of ventilation in it my creative is as happy as can be and I could fit like three more in that tank. Won't be for a couple years though need to do more research thanks.:):D;) PS might still get a Jacksons about how much are they and what's a good breeder

I don't think they make exo terra's large enough for an adult veiled. I believe the largest is a 18''x18''x36'' and an adult veiled should be housed in at least a 2'x2'x4'. The fact that it is glass is ok for exo terra's. People have success with these. If you do end up getting a jacksons, a 18x18x36 exo terra will be just fine. And I think you mentioned housing multiple chams in one enclosure and that should not be done. The only chams people have success housing together are certain pygmies, and even then the males can become territorial.

Thanks I think I will go for the jacksons about how much do they cost and is there as good breeder in Canada . Do they eat a lot and could I fit one in a 18 x 18 x 24 exo Terra tank. Thanks:D

You should get a 18x18x24. They cost about as much as a veiled. Maybe a little more. Here is a care sheet on them which you should review before purchasing.https://www.chameleonforums.com/care/caresheets/jacksons/ I'm not sure about any breeders in Canada.

EDIT: I meant to say 18x18x36, my apologies

Jacksons are certainly more suited to screen cages. Make sure you research lots as they are not one of the easier species to keep especially for a newish reptile keeper.

They will all cost quite a large amount to keep. A variety of feeders, uv tube replacement, supplements and plants all cost a fair bit of money. You also need to consider what will happen if the animal is ill and how you will pay for the vet fees if you have to.

Even though a jacksons can be kept in a smaller space it doesn't mean they have to be. They will use every bit of space available.

hi thanks what size tank do panthers need and could a veiled go in anything smaller if not how much would a enclosure that size cost as again i prefer veileds or panthers because of size and colour. Also worried about screen cages as i have a kitten who likes to play paddycake on the crickets heads well they are in the cage even if a lid is on. :D Could che climed the side of the cage or get her paws in. Also my town has veileds for $110-$175 are those good prices thanks again.

How do you feel today ;):p:rolleyes::eek::confused::eek::mad::D:(

I would not even allow your cat to be in the same room as the chameleon cage. There have been sad stories of people letting their cats get to their chams and they usually end in death. As far as price goes, what you stated is overpriced. Unless of course they come from highly spoken bloodlines. Oh, also it depends on the age. The price you listed is good for an adult, but you can get a juvenile for like $40-$80, + shipping if your not in the area. The proper cage for an adult Veiled or Panther will be around $80-$120 and should be a 24x24x48.
