Question About Enclosure? New! Please Help!

Okay, so I'm getting a baby panther, and originally I was gonna build him a big boy enclosure and I still will. But, I've also decided that to start I want to get a small prebuilt enclosure first so I have an extra one and because the one I'm building may be too big. He will be 3-5 months old. How big should I get the smaller pre built one? And when should I switch to the bigger one? Also, can you give recommendations for a kit?

There is no such thing as too big. Don’t waste your money on temporary housing, build it as big as you can, build it right, and build it once. It’s better for the chameleon that way.

First off, don't get a kit of any kind. Stay far, far away from the chameleon kit. You are better off buying things separately.

Also, there is no such thing as an enclosure that is too big for a chameleon IMO. The general size recommendation for a male panther chameleon is 2'x2'x4'. I've had my male panther in a 2'x2'x4' since he was 3 months old.

I've read all the stuff already ?? I've been obsessing about this too much which is why I think I'm having a hard time deciding. So my dream would be to build a 3x3x48 enclosure and have the bottom have a plexiglass portion to make it bioactive. Buttttt this is my first chamele

Sorry hit the send button too quick. This is my first Chameleon and I wanna give him the very best little life. Should I hold off on the bioactive part? But if I do, then later I would have to move him for a month which would stress him out. I have too many choices and things I wanna do! Hahah. Helllp

IMO I would hold off on bioactive until you get your husbandry down and are comfortable to go to the next level. Spend that money you’re saving toward proper lighting, misting, supplements, feeders, gutload, etc.

Ahhhhh I got my baby! I think he's coming in May! I've been waiting for Kammerflage to have a boy, and they just randomly put up some. These are his relatives. I'm so excited. Now off to build the best enclosure eveeeer

Congrats! I’m getting one from Kammerflage on Wednesday. Are you going to update your user name in May lol?

LOL remember to breathe... My only thoughts on babies in a huge cage... Personally I see nothing wrong with starting in a smaller enclosure as a first time keeper. If you think your anxious now just wait until the little one gets there. It is a bit overwhelming when you are just learning their behaviors.
1. you want to make sure baby is eating a certain amount every day so the feeder needs to be where baby can find it easily 2. I would not free feed because you do not want crickets biting baby while it sleeps. 3.You can monitor fecals/urates easily in a smaller cage because you can actually find them.
Finding a 4 inch baby in a 3x3x48 cage is going to be like Where's Waldo. Just my two cents... Good luck in your adventure. The best part is making a wonderful enclosure and then watching them thrive in it. :)

If you'd like and are able, buy a t5ho quad fixture, and practice your indoor plant growing skills while you get your chameleon husbandry down as well.

As a bonus you can use the quad fixture on his future new home.

Just an idea to ponder

Great idea! So this is my rough draft for the enclosure I'm building. I'm gonna take their advice and put him directly in it. It will have two feet depth, six feet tall, and four feet wide. I'm thinking I'll do screen on top so I can easily switch and put lights above, but maybe I should use wood and insert his lights in there. Hmmmmm
