Can locusts be kept in an airing cupboard for warmth etc or is light essential for them? I breed mealworms and waxworms in my airing cupboard and they are doing really well. I read a few sheets on breeding locusts and they was saying use light for 12 hours heatmat for 12. But I was wondering if I could do it my way?

where do you buy them and how big are they.

i have a 4 month old panther cham and hes getting bored with his crickets and ive tried hornworms and silkies but hes not eating those either as far as i can tell. what else can i try any suggestions ? and dont say roaches cause i couldnt deal with those lol

I find that of all the foods i have offered, it is the locust that my cham goes crazy for as they are so active, plus they are easy to gut load. Today i got my first lot of roaches and they seem to be going down well?

I'm in the UK so I cant really help you there. I cant get roaches and you cant get hoppers lol

Ok, you're really starting to make me jealous here. Due to laws designed to protect agriculture here, grasshoppers and locusts cannot be shipped across state lines (in most cases) which has made them undesireable to the commercial insect producers in the US. Thus, no one here knows about them really even though they are a FAR superior food item to most insects we currently use.

When I've caught or "back in the day" ordered quantities of grasshoppers they seemed to need light and heat in order to be active (eating, gutloading, actually living). So, I would say no, keep them in the light so that they will be healthier to feed to your chameleon as well as living longer.

I recently recieved my roaches from ebay for a reasonable price to. I have aso just brought 500 medium size locusts and was wondering on the best way to house them? I decided to get 500 as my chap gets through so many?

Yeah I thought that would be the case. Well, locusts just come in the same sort of tubs you get with crickets i.e. a plastic tub with lots of air wholes and an egg carton for them to hang on etc. If your housing them for a long time your going to need a big tub of some sort with lots of air wholes and like previously said, youll need food, light and heat for them to strive. But then again it all depends on how long your going to be keeping them. I'm sure they can last 2-3 weeks without TOO much attention.

I've just brought 437/277x340mm viv to store my 500 locusts. I've added a 25watt heat bulb so hopwefully it would be ok. I too would like to bred them but would not know where to start?
