problem: the past 2 days he has been going down to his resting spot in the middle day but not sleeping. what am I doing wrong?

The basking temp up to 95 degrees for a panther is high. Somewhere in the mid to upper 80s is good. He is probably trying to cool off by going down to the middle. He shouldn't be sleeping during the day at all.

As Heather said, the basking temps are on the high side. A 75 watt bulb seams like too much. Try replacing it with a 40 watt bulb, and measure the temps again.

You want to shoot for 83-85 degrees. Your set-up seams fine, so i'd say hes going to his resting spot to beat the heat.

Good luck, and keep us updated.
