Roach Questions (and some great news!!!)

I'll start on-topic with the roach questions...

-Are dubias the best feeder roach? Would anyone recommend keeping two types of roaches?

-Is it best to use the gel water cube things or will fruits/vegetables give them enough water? I read something about a damp paper towel too, just not sure which would work best.

-Can roaches eat what crickets can? I feed my crickets on extra small paper plates, and I give them a spoonful of a soupy blend of fruits/vegetables (collard greens, some melon, carrots, prickly pear cactus, carrot greens, oranges all mixed with a little water) and I give them a spoonful of a dry blend (dry milk, rice baby cereal, unsalted almonds, unsalted sunflower seeds, and bee pollen). I've seen super protein roach diets and stuff and then I also read that some people give just fruits and veggies... what works best here? Can roaches/feeder insects eat soy or tofu for protein?

-Is there any way to use a heatpad without a dimmer to heat the roaches?

-Do roaches need to be kept in darkness at all times?

-Can they be in the high humidity of my chameleons room?

-How many vent holes do they need in their tub home?

-Does anyone here feed stick bugs?

Haha, sorry, it's like a long twenty questions in this thread. I'm trying to expand the variety of feeders I keep, and I want to try my hand at having self-replenishing colonies of bugs rather than buying new food every week, but I also don't want to be unprepared or poison the bugs.

In any case, I was so excited this morning because Walter seems to have made a big turn-around!

His first shed with me was a very bad shed and he had pieces coming off for at least 2 weeks. I've been anticipating a new shed and he had it this morning! And it was completely done between 8:30 am and 1:00 pm! I'm very relieved.

Also, he had bright turquoise spots all over his body this morning. I'm glad to see color coming in as I'm positive he's at least 4.5 months.

On top of all of that, he ate two full-bodied crickets right out of my fingers this morning! It was the last thing I expected. I had just read on the chameleon news that getting behind the cricket might help... I did just that and he snapped the food from my fingers in seconds! And he hates eating in front of me!

Walter's face looks exactly like his dad's, it's so awesome to see that in him.

I keep feeling better about the whole situation, I'm glad Walter is doing better... I feel more worthy!

Sorry for the length guys.

I am breeding dubias now..

I'll start on-topic with the roach questions...

-Are dubias the best feeder roach? Would anyone recommend keeping two types of roaches? Dubia is the best!:) I think so far, 1 type is enough.

-Is it best to use the gel water cube things or will fruits/vegetables give them enough water? essentially, fruits and veggies supply them with water. but, I give water gel also just in caseI read something about a damp paper towel too, just not sure which would work best.
i go with water gel

-Can roaches eat what crickets can?
yes. Roaches pretty much eat everything edible

I do give an occasional boiled egg for protein. but other than that fruits and veggies are good. I'm not sure on soy.. but, i am guessing that's fine.. but, i am worried on feeding "soy" loaded insect to chameleon. I know for a fact that human can get soy poisoning from having too much soya based products. So, If i were you, i would be in a bit cautious mode.

-Is there any way to use a heatpad without a dimmer to heat the roaches?
not sure about that

-Do roaches need to be kept in darkness at all times?
If possible, yes.

-Can they be in the high humidity of my chameleons room?
as long as there is no mold growing in the food, they will be fine

-How many vent holes do they need in their tub home?
i used glass aquarium with screen on top

-Does anyone here feed stick bugs?
i don't know much about this. But, i would avoid using stickbug as staples

Sorry for the length guys.

Hope that helps

*** I like them... Easy to keep, less stink! I also keep hissing roaches, small ones can be fed to chams.

-Is it best to use the gel water cube things or will fruits/vegetables give them enough water? I read something about a damp paper towel too, just not sure which would work best.

***The little gel cube things are best. I keep a lid of that and dry food in at all times... They will drink and eat more than yea would think.

*** I use roach coach and whatever I have in the fridge... Apple, orange, mustard green... whatever...

-Is there any way to use a heatpad without a dimmer to heat the roaches?

*** I use a normal ol heat pad under it my tub.. If it is to hot then they can move away :p

-Do roaches need to be kept in darkness at all times?

*** I try to give mine dark areas as they get daytime light. This is simple, just have 2-3 egg flats in the tub.

-Can they be in the high humidity of my chameleons room?

*** I have NP with this...

-How many vent holes do they need in their tub home?

*** Dont even need a lid...

-Does anyone here feed stick bugs?

Roaches

I'll start on-topic with the roach questions...

-Are dubias the best feeder roach? Would anyone recommend keeping two types of roaches? I think every different roach is good in their own way when it comes to feeders, just depends on what you're feeding. I def. don't think dubia are THE BEST. I think Eublaberus distanti offer much more meat for a medium sized roach than Blaptica dubia. I would recommend keeping a couple of different types of roach, my animals can be picky with one type of roach but gobble up others. So, it's your call.

-Is it best to use the gel water cube things or will fruits/vegetables give them enough water? I read something about a damp paper towel too, just not sure which would work best. I offer my roaches plenty of things like carrots and sweet potatoe for moisture. Also, maybe once a day i'll VERY LIGHTLY mist the enclosure. I've never had any roaches have incomplete molts this way. Also, I offer my roaches commercial gutload to give them moisture

Roach care is pretty damn close to being the same as cricket care, minus the stink and noise. Don't waste your money buying food just for roaches if you have other herbivore animals, Just feed the roaches the scraps of what you buy for your other animals, IE the tail ends of lettuce heads, the butts of carrots, the ends of potatoes, etc.. I offer them alot of catfood and dogfood too so it's readily available all the time... i hear fishflakes are a good thing to try as well

-Is there any way to use a heatpad without a dimmer to heat the roaches? I just use a exoterra undertank heat pad and have had good success with that, they always hang out right on top of it.

-Do roaches need to be kept in darkness at all times? They prefer darkness but like any other animal i offer them a photo period. I'm sure they'd be just as happy hanging out in the dark all the time though

-Can they be in the high humidity of my chameleons room? Most assuredly they can, just be careful to check the food in their cage daily because mold will kill your colony STAT.

-How many vent holes do they need in their tub home? There is no one set number, and sorry vegas chad, but i would recommend having a tub with a lid because accidents do happen and if you have a cat or something that can potentially knock over the tub, there goes all of your roaches all over the floor.

-Does anyone here feed stick bugs? I'm giving them a shot in the near future when they come in the mail.

Awesome, I heard someone say that stick bugs are prolific and might be a good feeder and I remember watching a show about a guy who raises a ton of them, I thought they were really interesting. Where did you buy them from?

stickbugs

I would hate to tell ya teh guy i bought them from considering i paid for them and they never came in yet... I paid for them over two weeks ago and they still are not here. I'd like to try them though. I'm sure theyre dead by now if the guy ever sent them.

They could have been intercepted by the USDA. Happens all the time.
They are illegal in the States you know ... all of them.

walking sticks

Really? I wonder if the guy knew that who sent them or supposedly did.... Crap i wish i knew that before i paid 25 bucks for them!

You say you use "exoterra undertank heat pad" and a "tub with a lid." Do you worry about overheating the plastic or fire hazard or are you using glass tank and not a rubbermaid storage tub?

Rhettus,

Really.

I'm not saying people shouldn't try to acquire them ... I'm not saying people shouldn't sell them ... but, be careful and know the possible consequences.
Also, if you do get your hands on some ...do your research and practice extreme safety and security measures!
You don't want to be the one responsible for introducing a very invasive and destructive animal.
I DO NOT keep them (anymore) Kitty lived in harmony with them and did not consider them food. Mine were laying 2 to 3 eggs a day ... This eventually equals 1000's of sticks!
I (illegally) sold and shipped a lot of these animals with no problems, but it was always a bit nerve racking, and not really worth it.
The remainder of my collection were eventually frozen (on purpose) with substrate, eggs and all. One month in the freezer, then triple bagged in giant ziplock bags and disposed of.
One final word of caution:
The USDA and Fish and Game departments DO MONITER THESE FORUMS if you are keeping anything illegal .... you would be well advised to keep this information to yourself.:)

-Brad

edit: I am disclosing this information mainly to discourage people from keeping these insects. I do not believe I am in any danger, as I do not have any anymore. I have also conveniently forgotten the names of any people I may have provided with them.

your not saying stick bugs are illegal are you? ive got stick bugs in my back yard and ive seen huge ones in texas, btw im in new mexico (thats usa still)

Ooops, sorry guys, didn't know they were illegal. I've caught them in trees near my house on a few occasions, I didn't know they weren't native! Well, now I understand VegasChad's "G14 classified" comment.

Ha!
Sorry to hijack your thread.
Hey ... I wondered if you ever implemented pre-formed vitamin A supplementation with your chameleon.

-Brad

anyone have any reasons it would be illegal to keep a native bug? anyone have links to a site that tells what bugs are illegal. ive never heard of an illegal bug,

Oh no, it's no problem. I was curious about the stick bugs too. Haha, not only does it seem that they're prolific, but maybe too prolific.

I did, and Walter seems a lot healthier now. He just shed perfectly! Many thanks for that advice.
