Roaches

is there a petstore or any of you guys that are around LA county that sell roaches or doesn't mind giving me some .

I only want about 15 max (I am trying to get rid of my fear of roaches by getting one to feed my chameleon.. I can't go order 200 right away! I'll pass out or run like crazy if i saw that much...
Even one already enough to make me squirm..)

Does Dubia has wings? and if it does can it fly?
I DO NOT want to get the one that can fly or jump or climb the plastic cup..

blaptica dubia is your best choice i just ordered 56 last night from blapticadubia.com they have good deals right now. i just dont know what to feed them. the dubia is the one that does NOT climb fly stink hiss.

the males can fly. these are easily distinguishable due to their wings. however the don't fly all the time and they need a spot to launch from.

the best thing to do is keep the container partially covered while getting feeders. you should have no problems.

well.. that pretty much eliminate the possibility of Dubia for me...

These guys are considered 'non-flyers/non-climbers'. If you put one in your hand and lift it into the air, a male could possibly cross a room, but open a box and have one fly up in your face, not gonna happen. It's more like a lateral jump from what I've seen.

yeah I've had mine for about 3 weeks or so. I have yet to seen one fly (but as I said I keep my container partially covered).

They're basically flightless and you really need not worry.

I've got a large colony that and can send a few up your way

Plus, i am starting to hate crickets.. they are annoying and today the weirdest thing happened.
the fat crickets manage to get in between of the frame and the screen and get inside of the cage railing..
How ON EARTH?!!!

Wait... does this so called "papaya flower beetle" able to squish its body in between of the small openings of a shut cage door?

re: screen cages
it's a good idea to take some caulk and plug up the inside corners of the cage
to bar the crickets from getting in there.

Empty the cage out and from inside the cage you'll see small openings
in the corners where the screen isn't perfectly bound to the railings.
dab a bit of the sealant in there and plug that hole up.
make sure you get all of the corners for each screen plane
let it dry for awhile and then refill the cage.

If the crickets are managing to get out of your cage via another route
you will have to tighten things up a bit to keep the food in the cage.
(weather stripping the door?)

Once they are free, are they able to breed on their own and infest my house?
This is one of the reason why i still stick with crickets. At least,when they flee, they will die soon..

I've had a colony for 2 years now with a few getting out (my fault)
I've found them dead or very weak and clearly not doing well
So the answer is No. not unless you live in a roach friendly habitat

anyway with the dubia males are the only ones with wings and likely to get out
I try to feed these off first and keep the females for breeding
if a female was to get out... and breed
I don't think they would last long in the average home.

There are over 4,000 species of cockroaches. Less than 1% of them are pest species and only 5 of those are common house pests. Blaptica, Blaberus and other exotic roaches are not capable of infesting a home.


On the other hand Blatta lateralis (AKA:Shelfordella tartara, red runners, turkistan) is a known pest species and is a close relative of one of the most common pests, Blatta orientalis.

BTW: the crickets you buy are kown as House Crickets because they commonly infest houses in certain areas of Africa and Europe.
