Hi guys,
I bought my chameleon of a friend a few months back and really wanna look after him as best I can iv been doing as much research but I have some things I wanna make sure I'm doing right. Also there are a few things he does which worry me at times.

He's a male yemen veiled chameleon and about 1 year old and a really friendly cham

He has a Komodo 15W UVB 5.0 Bulb---> See Product
And an EXO-TERRA Infrared Basking Bulb---> See Product
The basking bulb is on between 7am - 7pm
and the UVB is on 8am - 8pm

On average his temps are:
Day 30c/86f
Basking 34c/93f
Cool 28c/82f
Night 20c/68f

He eats about 3-4 Locusts a day
Mon - Fri They are dusted with Calci-pure---> See Product
Sat & Sun They are dusted with Nutrobal---> See Product

I Mist him during the day and aim for about 70% humidity I always drip the spray bottle near his and give him the choice to have a drink some times he does sometimes he don't.
I usually boil up the water that I spray to help possibly kill any germs from the tap and obviously let it cool down before spraying.
One thing that I am quite confused about though is when I got the cham I was told by the previous owner to add drops of grapefruit seed extract to his water before misting.---> See Product
Is this OK to do? Will my cham have any benefit from this?

He does currently have a floor substrate Komodo Tropical Terrain---> See Product
I plan on getting rid of this as I have heard that using this does not really benefit me chameleon. Am I right here? Also he came with a heat mat, is this necessary?

So the main things that a worrying me:

1) most days i am at home during the week and he is fine, he'll come out and chill and have a wonder up my curtains but am out during a few hours in afternoon on other day time. The other week I was at home on an afternoon when I am usually out. I walked past the viv and heard really loud hissing, not like he has ever hissed before, he's mouth was wide open, he sucked in his belly so he was thin and tall and he did not look happy to see me, His skin was a very bright cool green colour with thin defined strong black stripes and the few dark specks on his head were all very black and defined. I moved right away from him and he continued to hiss (not as loud) until he hid at the bottom of his viv under his dangeling leaves where he stayed for a few hours.(once he was there he seemed normal and even let me put my hand inside to stroke his head a few hours later)

This brings my to my 2nd and final worry, the spot he retreated to..

2) The angry hissing incident has happened one time after this and on both occasions he went to the exact same place to hide. he has slept in this place, on the floor a number of times now and I worry if there is anything wrong with that.
Also tonight is the second time he has slept on the mesh roof of his viv the first time he was OK and seemed fine, this time he fell trying to get up there. but straight away he climbed back up there to get comfy and went straight to sleep. He didn't seem to like me trying to get him down from the top so I placed his hammock high and under Neath him incase he fell again, should I just let him get annoyed and safely get him down of is he ok?

Sorry there is so much there, I would really appreciate anybody's time and input on the way I'm looking after him.
Please be honest and as critical as you need to be! I Really want him to be as comfortable and well as possible :)

Here is a picture of the little guy too :)
See Picture

I look forward to any responses

What species of chameleon?
The red bulb arnt very good for a Cham I would change that for a clear bulb ( normal household bulb)and the temps are very high they will want turning down( how far depends on the species)
Have the UVB and baskin bulb turn on and of together
Nutrobal should be used twice a month as well as a multivitamin twice a month plus your plain cal every other feed for either panthers or veileds
I would not add anything to the water and yes remove the substrait and no a heat may has no use for a Cham remove it strait away, it is infact making the Viv worse as you want the bottom of the Viv to be the coldest part
If he is hissing just leave him be, he doesn't want to be messed with and that's normal, chams are mainly a look but don't touch reptile and he will be fine sleeping I would not disturb his sleep
If I've missed anything or you have any more questions just ask

Welcome to the forum and the world of chameleons!

What were you wearing when he was hissing at you? Chameleons react to certain colors and patterns. Just one possibility for his hissing.

Do you feed/gutload the insects well?

Thanks for the help guys, I will be changing the timers for his lights, is there a specific 12 hour slot I should have them on and off like 8&8 or 7&7?

When I remove the flooring is there anything else I can replace it with? I don't like the idea of him accidently falling down and landing with no padding beneath him?

I was wearing a grey and white shirt with dark blue jeans at the time when he hissed at me

Yes I feed the locusts with a bag of mixed lettuce? is this ok to do? Is there any type of vegetation I need to say away from using?

Also what is it about the red bulbs that are bad? would you be able to give me advice on what bulbs to get I'm a little confused about the difference in the bulbs and just seem to be spending money on exo-terra expensive stuff.

Welcome to the forums. This is a great place to learn about chameleons. It's best to keep the floor bear for easy cleanings. If he's falling then he probably has a medical problem. I keep veileds and they are one of the smartest species that show the most personality. IMO I have my blog linked for you below. It tells about gut load and many other things you will need to know to keep you boy healthy and happy.

The reb bulb just arnt natural an if you use it at night it will keep your cham awake. Jus use a normal household bulb don't fall for the reptile shop rubbish paying 5 quid for a bulb, it's the same as the 60 pence bulb in tesco :)
I buy 20 bulbs of eBay for 11 quid
I wouldn't put anything on the base it's the best way to go much cleaner, less chance to develop mold to
My lights come on at 7am and go of at 8pm
Hope this helps

I put reptile carpet on the floor of Popeyes viv and hoover it every week. Iyou need to turn the heat down . He is too hot. A mixture of feeders would be good. They can get bored of one kind.

I agree with you 100% Jann, veiled chams do seem to be smarter then the other species, and they have great personalities.
Smeagie is a real character, and no question, he is King of the cham room (AKA; Chammietown  )

Looking good now!

Thanks for all the help guys! I finished re doing his whole viv this morning.
No base soil, added pots at the bottom with wholes to catch water from leaves, the heat mat is unplugged and staying that way and temps are all looking good!

Its only been 5 hours since his new set-up but Freddie looks really chilled and is no longer spending any time on the floor and he has been much more friendly towards me he is also staying off his mesh ceiling as I have moved his branches around more to give him more areas to climb about. I'm also about to order some normal bulbs also :) Thanks for your help guys! This site is awesome look forward to more activity on here!

Heres another picture of him in his new home :)
