should I be concerned?

Omar has been battling with a serious thermal injury for several weeks now. It runs almost the entire length of his back and the tip of his casque. A couple weeks ago, part of the eschar on his back came off and exposed essentially the muscles and tendons on his spine. He went to the vet for this and I have been using gentimicin spray and also putting Neosporin on the open area. I know it is painful because he pulls away from the Q-tip. Yesterday I was cleaning his body (as the Neosporin sort of migrates down his sides) and he struggles when I do this. So during this process yesterday, he started closing his eyes. Today when I got him out he immediately closed his eyes and was very still while I tended to his burns. I thought I read somewhere on the forums that chams will close their eyes if stressed.

He has otherwise been active and I have not noticed him doing this in his cage. He did not eat much yesterday but I recall that when the eschar ripped off his back he did not eat for a day or so either. He has a vet appointment for Monday. I am really worried about him, especially after what happened to Clouseau. I was very careful about hand washing in between lizards too but I am afraid he is losing this battle and the stress is taking a toll.

Maybe he's thinking if he closes his eyes, you'll go away?
Or just resigning himself to his treatment?
Hope he improves soon. Kath.

Mine will close their eyes occasionally when I have to administer medicine or do something else less than pleasant (dried spem plug removal anyone?). I have read it is a response to a stressor, or as Kath said, a "please go away". Different from sitting around with the eyes closed. I hope your little guy gets better soon- you have had a rough time lately!

That's what I was thinking too. BUT this evening he was thrashing his head back and forth with his mouth open and ejected what looked like a bunch of clear mucus from his mouth! So antibiotics here we come! I cannot for the life of me figure out why he got sick too! As I said I was very careful about washing between handling him and Clouseau. I know in humans stress can impair immune function so I guess it could be from getting burn care everyday because he sure hates it. I swear if something happens to him I may just give up on the whole shebang! I feel like a big failure :(

Don't despair, you're doing all you can. Hopefully he'll improve. Please don't beat yourself up. Kath.
