Silkworm Cocoons

I just thought I would share some pictures of my silkworm breeding project. Right now, I have about 35 cocoons in 2 shoe boxes and 2 moths just emerged tonight. I am hoping to have a stable supply of silkworm going in the future.:D

Cool I just ordered online silkworms for my female veiled chameleon. she is 9 weeks old. do you have any suggestions on how to feel them to her ie... do I just put them in the bottom of the cage? I have not tried to cup feed her yet. We have her now two weeks and we love her. she seems to be doing fine.. thanks

Hi, I cup feed crickets every other week. But the silkies I put on branches and/or vines. :)

do they stay on the vines or branches? cuz when i try to do that with mealworms and waxworms they just fall off. i buy the ones from petsmart and petco, they probley are not good anyways. im going to order some silkworms, any place yall recommend?

I order from Coastal.
Silkworms do a very good job of staying on and climbing around on vines and branches.

I chime in with putting them on vines...Both my veileds and panther just eat them up...The veiled will sit on another branch and just eats them as fast as I can put them on...

yeah sometime they stick to the vines too well...i have seen chams shoot their tongue and not be able to pull the silkie back in cuz it had attached to the vine. i think some of my chams know this and don't bother with the tongue, they just go up and eat them right off the branch. also, i wouldn't put anything on the floor, seeing as that is the place where the #1s and #2s end up...

I order from John at Coastal Silkworms. I dont have any problems they came in very quick and packed extremly well.

Same here, I have always ordered from Coastal Silkworms. I never had any problems with them and they do come in very quickly. :)

Good Luck! The first time that I had cocoons, more than 20 of them, I sucessfully had eggs that hatched and I was overrun with silkworms, but luckily the local petstores were happy to take them from me. The seond time I got eggs, none of them hatched! I am getting cocoons again-and have my fingers crossed!

You don't have to let your eggs hatch out all at once. To make it more manageable, you can store some of the silkworm eggs in the refrigerator. They won't hatch until you take them out of the refrigerator.
I've heard that you can keep them in there for about 6 months to a year. The last batch that I hatched after refrigeration had been in there for about 3 months, so I can't verify the maximum 'shelf life' of the eggs in the refrigerator, but they were certainly good for a couple of months.

I will definitely try that next time. This last batch of eggs I hatched from Coastal was so cooperative! For weeks I have had big ones to feed my Veileds and smaller ones to feed the smaller chams. Now they are all cocooning or croaking. Time for new eggs!
