silkworm growing

I hope to get a 5 month Jackson's from FLChams soon, but unfortunately I bought a setup kit from Screameleons five days ago and still hasn't shipped (no fault of theirs, the bad snow situation is causing delayed shipment of parts) and with how bad the storms were, I hate to think how long I could be waiting.

Argh, move to FL and you still can't escape the snow's wrath!!

Anyway, sorry for the rambling, but I'm just curious how long I should expect to "grow" silkworms from hatching (will be buying eggs and feed from silkwormshop.com) to the correct size. I want to make sure I have the correct size and amount when I do have the cham and he's settled and ready to feed.

You can pro start feeding off around 3 weeks. It takes 7-10 days to hatch, a week to be around half and inch and another half a week to a week to get to a size where you wont have to feed like 100. By 3 weeks you should be fine and from then on to full grown your chameleon at 5 months should be able to handle it since they are so soft. Make sure to get alot of food they eat alot.

okay, thanks, this is great as it gives me a lot of time to start with the silkworms now, I just ordered the minimum of 250 eggs and some chow. so you're saying this is basically the 'full-size' worm at about 3 weeks, and good to start feeding him these right away?

about how many should I be giving him at a time?

No by about 3 weeks from getting them including hatching youll have medium small to medium prob. They will be like 3/4 to and inch or so based on food and heat. They will have another 2.5 or 3 weeks before they are full grown. The smaller ones can be fed similar to large to medium crickets so if you fed 6-7 large crickets i would give like 7-8 medium silkies. Once they are bigger one or two should do it just use your best judgment and dont forget to mix up the meals still if you can.

Coastal Silkworms has Zebra Silks that are a bit hardier than the regular silkworms. You can buy 1,000 Zebra eggs, for $17.98, or 250 for $15.98.
If your room temperature is 65 degrees or so, they take longer to mature, and die off at lower temperatures can occur.:D

Thanks, that helps a lot for a general idea of what I should do. i plan on going to the petshop to get him crickets every now and then, and I'll probably have to order online for other things. I'm still considering raising snails, too.

i live in canada that means i have to buy for a minimum of $100... do you know another place that sells chow?
