I am raising silkies and they r cocooning so after they do that and hatch they will mate and I know to keep the black eggs cause their supposed to be fertilized. Right?? and should I immediately put them n the fridge? and how long will they keep n the fridge?? Thanks

they won't be black at first... be sure to put the moths in or on something that the eggs can't stick to easily.... when the eggs are deposited they are sticky. you can let the eggs sit out for a day or two then cool them in the fridge and should be good for a couple of months... I think they need to be cooled before you can hatch them...

yeap. like a week or so.

I had a few groups of eggs hatch b4 I cooled them, which is somewhat rare. U usually need to cool them down first. I cool them for 3-4 weeks in the frig. When the moths pair up, I cut the bottom off of plastic cups and place the cups upside down over them. This way the female lays her eggs with in the cup diameter and not all over the bin. I put them on paper towel, some use paper bags, cut the circle out and into the bag they go. Good luck!!

Yes wait a few days.
But its fine if the eggs stick to something (like papertowel).
I dont bother to put mine in the fridge, and they still hatch. Could be my ambient temp is cooler all year round that those in areas closer to equator
Cooling them does allow you to delay hatching until you want them. Hatch rate apparently drops the longer you store in fridge

How long does it take for them to hatch?? Supposedly eggs are good for up to a year in the frig.

You should be able to find them online. Google plastic petri dish and you get a bunch of links. Looks like they go for around $5-6 for 20. Would you be interested in selling a few of your cocoons? I had 2 from my last batch of silkies but only one moth made it. The other one dried up in the cocoon. I have been wanting to try going through the life cycle but I never make it all the way through. PM me if interested.

What do people keep their silkies in especially right before they cocoon? Tried this once but did not seem to leave the silkies with enough room to cocoon, emerge and mate. Was also surprised by the quick cocoon times - out faster than I expected. How long are yours in their cocoons. What temps do you keep your silkies at while raising? i kept mine in a small incubator which is part of the reason I ran out of space. The site below was a good site for those thinking about starting - but looking for other tips.
