Some Q's

I have recently taken my female veiled to the vet. for a first time checkup and to get this bump checked out on her lip. To make a long story short she has two kinds of parasites which i figured she had some kind or parasite. The Vet. said Pinworm and Trichomonad were the culprits and she gave me some antibiotics to inject every 3 days and rub this topical stuff on the lip daily with a q-tip. I was also given two diff. bottles for the parasites and am currently administering one but she said to hold off on the other one until this treatment is finished which is 10 days. so here are my questions. they told me to take a tongue depressor and place it sideways in the mouth and then use this syringe they gave me to place it past the airway hole (not sure the proper term..sorry) and shoot it down her throat. so my problem is this, they didn't show me physically with my chameleon how to handle her and open her mouth. should i be forceful? i mean so far i have to grab her in my hand, sort of vice her head between my thumb and forefinger knuckle and literally pry her mouth open. it's quite violent so far and very stressful. so stressful she will close both eyes completely.

I understand the need to give her this medication for the parasites but with this ammount of handling would it not be worse as of right now. should i wait til the injections are done? or should i keep wiping her bump on the lip daily with the topical and then taking her out of her cage by hand, forcing her mouth open and shoving a cylinder in her throat and depositing solution. As of right now she hasn't been eating as much which is understandable and she has been under a great deal of stress. (duuh)

One other thing the vet. did not mention if i should clean the cage thoroughly or anything. she seemed very knowledgable about chams and could tell that i read A LOT about them. maybe she thought that i knew?? i'm not sure because what i've read so far i should be throwing things away if they can't be sterilized but she never said to me. what should i do? thanks so much in advance for reading this HUGE post and helping out.

Howdy Scott,

Post the list of all meds, dosages, and schedules that you were given.

As for the parasite meds, rather than forcing her to take it via a syringe and tube down her throat, it is likely that they will have the same effect if you inject the parasite drug into feeders and feed-off right away. That's assuming that the concentration that you were given is such that the volume needed will easily fit inside something like a superworm etc. Volumes up to ~0.3ml usually fit in superworms, silkworms, hornworms and similar sized insects.

Im not sure, but I think a thorough cage cleaning in necessary to ensure no reoccurance of Pinworms. Im hoping someone else will chime in for you on that.

i will post that list with meds, doses, etc. when i get home as i am currently at work. I am totally with you on that one Dave but since her appetite has dwindled quite a bit since the visit to the vet. it might be tough. I think she's afraid of me, cause to her the big monster shoved her in a dark quiet box took her to the lady that gave her injections and now he wipes "goo" on her lip every morning. I'm pretty sure she's a lot more cautious of me now since it's really the first time i've handled her this much at all. She really stressed out and obviously associates me with either pain or discomfort or just bothering her too much now.

I'm not sure if she will eat it right away cause she's so shy now. i guess i could inject the superworm go into the room and place it in her feeding cup and then go straight out and never look at her and see if she eats it fast enough? i'm not sure cause it needs to be refrigerated but i will look into it a little more and post what was recommended by the herp. i saw.

I would think leave her alone for two days , don't feed, inject superworm, put in cage, leave her alone for 1 hour and checkback. Until shes done taking the meds feed her lightly so she will want the medicated food, I'm a beginner though so see what others say about this first!!

Can you post a picture of the lip please?
Did the vet clean out the lip bump and do a culture and sensitivity test on any exudate?

Treatments

For the bump on the lip, yes she cleaned it out and said if the swelling persists or if it has an absess then they will have to lance it off. She said to schedule a checkup in 7-10 days to determine the overall recovery and see what else is needed.

The instructions are this for the lip treatment: 3 antibiotic injections use 1 every 3 days and they demo'd how to restrain her properly and administer the injection. Silver sulfadiazen apply a thin coat to the wound site once a day for 10 days.

Now for the parasites which are Pinworm and Trichomonad according to them. The treatment i'm using right now is 0.02ML Metronidazoie orally every day for 5 days. Next is 0.02ML Panacur by mouth once every 24 hrs for 3 days and repeat in 10 days, do not start until finished with metronidazoie treatment.
